with both wheels off the ground you will need to lock/hold one wheel to get the other to drive, one side then the other,
were on the south coast im in St Leonards on sea,

Definitely not clutch in my view, as some sort of drive is getting to the speedo sensor which, if I understand fully, is after the gearbox output.

The speed sensor is on the RH driveshaft, so it does read silly speeds on wheel spin - or zero, depending on which wheel is spinning
No need to worry about jamming the wheels for test, just pull the handbrake on! In fact, if the OS shaft is broken, then it probably won't matter and there will enough drag in the brakes to stop the hub rotating.
