Laguna won't start

Got a problem with my '94 Laguna 1.8 RT.
The starter motor went an has been replaced about a week ago. A few days later the car cut out whilst driving and now will not start.
The immobiliser seems fine, there is a spark in the plugs and fuel being fed.
When the engine turns over it tends to back-fire into the carb. My mechanic is baffled.
Help anyone?

Hi, dont know much about laguna's, but if you have fuel and a spark, then i would check the timing, the belt may have jumped a few teeth the last time you drove the car
