hi new here,
the above happened to my xantia its a X reg 110bhp HDi i have been told that the pistons are shot and every rocker is broken.
so am looking for an engine only thing is i dont understand the engine codes...i dont know which mines is and what HDi engines will fit.
my engine number is DYCS4008105 can anyone tell me the actuall engine code from that...i notice there are RHYengines and such.
any help is much appreciated.

Hmmm that doesnt help me all that much, as thats the number from the engine. can anyone tell me if there are any other markings on the block/ head that would indicate what the engine is.... i know for sure its supposed to be the 110bhp model as thats what comes up with insurance on the number plate.

Offtiimes it is only the rockers that break so if you feel brave, replace those and see if the engine is OK. The valves are at 90 degrees to the pistons and apart from leaving indentations in them, damage (apart from the rockers) is often surprisingly minor.
How were the pistons deemed to be "shot"
DW10ATED is the correct designation for the engine. Donors include the Xsara, Pug 306 and 406 and a number of PSA White Vans. Any breaker worth his salt will know the correct engine.
Paul (CitroenXM) may be able to tell you that an HDi 90 engine can be used with some changes.

Heads and blocks are basically the same, although there are a few small differences, BUT a HDi 90 engine WILL do the job just the same, and I HAVE prooved this to myself, as the HDi 90 that I converted to 110bhp has faultlessy run for 15000 miles ALREADY... From a 90 to 110, you'd ONLY need to swap Turbo and inlet manifold from the 110 unit, AND the flywheel and thats the biggest changes... ALL the fuel system DOES NOT need changing!
Here is my original post about the dreaded swap..
As for your damage,
The Pistons WONT be shot, they DO NOT damaged internally like the old XUD engines doo..
you SHOULD ONLY need to change the rocker fingers, as these are designed to break and take the impact so theres no need to remove the head!!
Get a set of Fingers in and she should be right as rain!!!

Personally i seen the pistons today and there isn't even a mark on them at all...the carbon hasnt been disturbed.
My main issue is that now i have a bot full of pieces and i never took it to bits.
I havent had a lot of experience with diesel engines...but have rebuilt a few petrol engines.
I would be doing the work myself anyway.
With regards to the head that you have, could you PM me a price as i might just have it and rebuild the current engine as it was running sweet as a nut before hand... it was the auxiliary belt that snapped and became tangled in the timing belt that caused the problem.
There is a HDi engine from a 2005 berlingo i think it is on ebay, i was unsure if this would bolt in as it "looks" the same.

No bent valves with a broken timing belt is amazing !! Are the rockers designed to be a mechanical fuse then ? If thats an intentional design feature I'm impressed !
BTW , how did a broken ancillary belt get tangled in the timing belt ? It's fully enclosed in covers.

HDI, I thought you'd know that!
The HDi unit was intentinally designed like that after XUD experiance's of broken cam belts taken Cam SHAFTs and Cap Bearings too, they didn't want that much of a disaster again, so in a word, Yes you could see them as a fuse...

Neat !! Pity engines don't have bevel gear & shaft driven cams any more , just think , no muckin cam belts to change !!

Yep, my old HDi slipped its belt. Ended up with one broken rocker. Replaced it and put it all back together and all was fine.

I did wonder when i glanced at the pistons and the head and seen no marks on the crown of the pistons and all the valves seating properly, although i havent tried moving the valves to see if they are free but definately doesnt resemble the sight of a timing belt failure that i am used to seeing on petrol engines.
BTW cant believe the quick information and help given to a newbie, by far the most helpful and friendly forum i have joined. usually people with higher post counts on other forums tend not to communicate with the newbies like me.

Hi,
from whats been said it sounds like your mechanic is a bit out of date....in as much that he's thinking along the same lines as I would have been before reading this thread.....that a snapped cam belt only takes out the rockers & not the head like it used to on the 1.9 TD engines....I never knew that.
Vauxhall engines used to be like that ....the rockers were the weak part so if the worst happened (snapped cam belt) they would snap & in doing so save the head...a good design it has to be said.
