Hi, My car is a Renault Clio 3 1.5 DCI 86 2006 reg.
My car is a driving school car and when driven 'properly' all is well, however when driven by a 'learner' if they bring the clutch up too quickly or change down too early there is what I can only describe as an almighty bang under my feet on the passenger side.
This is my 3rd Clio and have never encountered any thing like this before.
I have jacked it up myself three times and removed the undertray and wheels but couldn't find anything wrong, so in desperation I took it to my local garage who I have used for many years (not a Renault garage but very trustworthy) took the mechanic out for a short drive, I drove the car like a learner so that he could hear the noise, he said it was probably a faulty engine mounting and booked the car in to have a look at it. He said that he had it on the ramp for an hour and a half but couldn't find anything wrong, about a week later I took to a second garage recommended to me by a friend and exactly the same thing happened, so in desperation I took it to my local Renault dealer (the car is still under warranty but my Renault dealer is a long way from me) I did my 'learner' drive and the technician said engine mountings! and booked it in, I took it in and again he couldn't find anything wrong. (I watched this chap working on the car through a glass door and he seemed to have taken the whole suspension to pieces!)
So I still have the noise.
Can anyone help me PLEASE?
Russell Barr.

It it's not an engine mount than it can only be something on the suspension...but I would expect Renault to be able to diagnose this!
I would look at the wishbone mounts....the rear one on the passenger side. Sometimes these can appear ok but when the car is in motion there is a lot of load on them....especially when running on Kangaroo juice!
Cheers.

Hi Russell,
The only way you can check them is to jack up the car & support it on axle stands or if you have ramp these would probably be better.
Then using a leaver pry between the mount & the body of the car & look for movement on the mount, there will obviously be some but if you are getting a knocking noise the movement should be excessive.
That said I had a similar knocking on the front passenger side of my ZX a while back...I tested the wishbone mounts as described but the movement didn't seem that excessive when compared to the mounts on the drivers side that wasn't knocking, However replacing the rear mount cured the knocking!
Cheers.

Hi,
Sorry to hear of your continuing knocking problem despite your new wishbone
If you can feel the knocking on the floor of the car it has to be something in that vicinity, or so you would think.
I can't really offer any more advice as I'm now at a loss also, you seem to have had everything checked (engine mounts, suspension etc).
Why not try asking on the Renault forum where there maybe someone that has suffered the same symptoms & can offer more specific advice.

Good luck.

I was going to do a bit research to help out, but then noticed the post was from 2008!
He said it was a driving school car.....probably his dual controls if Renaults finest brains replaced the usual suspects without success
