Megane Starting problems - diesel

My 98 Megane Scenic manual diesel wouldn't start after being on holiday for one week - completely dead (no immobiliser laight flashing). Couldn't jump start it (was trying to turn over) nor push/tow/clutch start it.

Put in a second-hand charged battery, and this time we could clutch start it with a tow. Trying to start from ignition though I only get a 'click' as you turn the key, then nothing - nada, zip (though lights, wipers etc work)

Any suggestions?

I have a 98 Megane TDi - it had the same problem after it's MOT and mechanic drained the battery, we tried everything, but the old battery wouldn't charge, took a bran new battery to get it going, haven't had any issues til now, and it's not the battery this time thats stopping it starting.

Are you sure the secondhand battery is powerful enough to start it?
