Xantia Aux Belt Auto Tensioner

I am getting an awful noise from near my aux belt, like a rattle and jangle the auto tensioner has slightly kicked out could this be the cause.
It has caused the belt to jump over the edge of the hydro pump and strip a bit off the belt. How much are these auto tensioner things? How do i get there to change it?

To get at the auto tensioner you'll need to jack up the car in such a way that you can take the front right wheel off while the car is securely supported.

Then you remove the plastic covers in the wheel arch to gain access to it. If you're removing and refitting a belt it helps to remove the plastic box that holds the engine ECU as well, although it can be done without removing it...

Careful!!! When the auxillary belt starts to strip it is entirely possible for the 'stripped off' part to find it's way inside the cambelt cover and cause havoc i.e smashed cambelt pulley/broken cambelt and associated destruction.

Hi Gav425,

There are several different varitions for tensioning th aux belt.
My xantia has the pulley tensioner and an additional damping spring which also tension the belt.
When my belt was shredding up it was the damping spring which has a bearing and pulley on it.The bearing had collapsed and was causing the belt to run out of alignment.
Will find the diagram on the offical citroen parts and post it.

I assume your aux belt it the really big one 1725 teeth!

Hi Gav,

I got myself a bit confused it is the tension roller which caused my problems and it's the length of the belt not no of teeth 1725

If you can access the citroen part site and look at alternator fixings you will see the tension roller (No 3)

Hope this helps.

It's a pain to replace in the car too

Hi Gav,
I see from the photo yours would appear to be an early Mk 2 with colour co-ordinated bumper 's etc.

Dalco do a repair kit for the xantia , thats what I bought.
I got it from a good motor factors for £70 which included a new belt tensioner and other bits and bobs.

Unfortunately there was slight difference between the bolts securing the roller so I couldn't use the old metal roller. The new one is plastic and be careful not to damage same or the belt is shredded again.

Or the alernative is the dealer at approx £70 for the part.

The choice is yours

I'm quite sure its possible to find the correct varaint at GSF, Eurocarparts, Hallfords or the like ...
- at a reduced cost to Citroen price.

Thats a late Mk1, my '97 is like that with the body coloured bumpers. They appear to be the same type of bumper as before except that they're painted body coloured instead of being "plain". They're most definately different to the Mk2 bumpers, the Mk2 bumpers have a smooth / glossy finish to them where as the Mk1 body coloured ones have a texture to them.
