The arms are 99.9% of the time recoverable, even if in fairly bad condition. Just a set of bearings is what's needed... and a big dollop of grease to keep them happy for as long as possible.

I know it's a really old thread, but if this bearing is the problem, can you feel the play if you lift the car up, or is it the same as in the Xsara, where it wasn't possible.

Probably if you depressure the suspension. Usually they give themselves away by being noisy, or the tyres developing in inward lean at the top.

With suspension depressurised and car jacked up, it is possible to detect yes.
