I think the industry is just afraid of failure, and so lacks courage. But, in an age of 3-D CAD and digital prototyping, where's the excuse?

I think the main issues are - safety. The regulations cover all sorts about passenger and pedestrian safety in an accident. This definitely takes away any "outlandish" styling. Fuel economy - aerodynamics, so again, vehicles are ending up looking similar wherever they are from. It's all progress in one form, but a step backwards in another..

Oh yes, cheerful and happy as well as different. I hate the current fetish for having cars painted in the most drab shades... It makes them look so miserable and makes me feel the same...

I think that's right. In theory, there must be an ideal shape for a car - an appropriate compromise between all the applicable factors. With today's data processing power, I'm pretty sure that it could be precisely defined, and probably has been by manufacturers' design departments. Cost and marketing are the main modifiers ensuring that all cars are not identical, I suspect, but they're certainly converging.
