Server Maintenance 30/6/2017 - Completed

Post by xantia_v6 »

Our hosting company has scheduled a maintenance operation on Friday 30/6/2017. This site should be off line for approximately 30 minutes, some time after 21:00 BST.
The purpose of the maintenance is to replace the server RAM with bigger, faster devices, but I am not sure if we will see any direct speed benefits.

The forum seems to be very speedy now Mike - with one exception that I have noticed over the past couple of weeks particularly - the Pickled Egg thread.
I presume it is all the YouTube clips taking time to load.

The Youtube clips don't actually come from our server (we just provide a link to them), so and that topic seems to me to be just as quick to load as everything else, so I don't know what is happening for you. Our server package has a fixed amount of RAM included, so I suspect that any improvement for us will be very minor.

May just be my broadband connection - they do take a while to appear in a couple of other forums.

I would be inclined to agree. I often have a thread load up and the utube videos follow shortly afterwards.

Yes, I find the new forum server is consistently fast. Certainly a big improvement on the old one :)

The server is back up and running. The maintenance took a little longer than expected, but as far as I can see, all services have restarted correctly.

It doesn't seem any faster to me but then FCF is not a slow forum for me to start with.

To be honest, I don't think that we will see any benefit, as we don't get any more RAM, and the forum speed is more limited by processor speed and disk access time than RAM speed.
