POTD The beauty of the leaf in Autumn

Let them lie!
Nature deals with its detritus far better than the
human with leaf blowers and matches.
These will be gone in the first decent gust, and where they next lie the fungi, insects, worms and bacteria will return them and their nutrients to the soil, at nature's pace.

I like a Leaf

I like leaves on trees

and I like carpets of Leaves

and their patterns

and their vibrant colours!

True enough but they are a haven for slugs and a toilet for cats, neither of which please me.

Can't argue with that but there are methods used by humans, namely me, which prevent the nuisance mentioned by Steve, while preserving the nutrients to be returned to the garden. I simply rake them up and put them in the brown bin which goes off for composting at the local centre. Occasionally I lay some on the dahlia bed to rot down between lifting the tubers and replanting next spring. Either way I don't leave them to encourage the pests or destroy them by fire!!

My dad used to trawl local forests for leaves and sphagnum moss that he composted, along with seaweed, for his allotment. His allotment was beside the river so he got the seaweed from there.

Far too much like hard work for the likes of me.

Yes and no for leaving leaves where they lie. It depends on the location and what you're trying to achieve. With a relatively dense tree canopy where you're trying to achieve a woodland grass / meadow then it benefits to remove most - though certainly not all - the leaves. If you don't then the grass weakens and dies out due to being covered by leaves and the weeds take over - simple survival of the fittest in that respect. Also, you don't actually want soil enriched by rotting leaves as that's counterproductive. I've successfully increased the orchid population here in part by using a 'leaf management policy' ! In a straightforward woodland setting then yes, leave all the leaves.
In the end, it's horses for courses.

One end of today's Salcey Forest Duathlon Transition Area...

A highly secure area where even photography is banned... It contains, whilst the race is in progress, a collection of very valuable bikes and competitor's essential personal possessions...

I'd estimate the combined value of bikes in this area today was close to half a million pounds...

I have spotted a few bumble bees over the last few weeks. For some reason they like my bedroom window (probably because it is south facing). If I lower the window they find it helpful to rest and sun themselves.

I'd love to see someone compete in a duathlon on one Mick Having said that' I'm not sure one would pass the scrutiny of the technical officials...

Just like in motor racing our bikes are subject to scrutineering before being allowed into transition...
