I'm considering having it insured for him as primary driver and see if it costs any less.
If you have younger family members that may be a viable option for you.
I don't think they will accept my daughter, she lives in Annapolis Maryland. :)
Best price offered on Compare the market is still over £1100. :( I'm going to call Direct Line on the phone, see if they'll knock of more to get below that.

That seems outrageous to me Gibbo, ok given your age doesn't help but surely is this possibly down to EV fire risk or something? What group is the car? :)

From this which article looks like very few insurance providers offer policies.for the approaching 90’s
The up to 99 years providers mentioned were

saga, sainsbury’s Bank, Churchill, privilege and your already tried Direct
Line

Co op and AA are also highlighted in one of the tables as max age 99 providers
Many have a cut off point of 80, average maximum age on providers policies 87.

It's in group 22 Mick but if you think the other quotes are outrageous I just did one from the RAC £2,413.62

I don't think it's the fire risk as such, but there has been the not uncommon situation where EVs have been written off for relatively innocuous damage as the insurer is wary of unseen battery damage and the possible associated liability of future 'thermal incidents'. It's easier to scrap the car than live with the liability issue.
The 'Battery As A Service' model sidesteps this particular issue as the battery pack could easily be replaced irrespective of unseen damage.

Gibbo, trailed this last year in his Insurance renewal with direct line
Gibbo2286 wrote: 02 Mar 2024, 09:20 Not wrong there Marc, every year after you reach 70 they up it, I've got over fifty years no claims but even the little Zoe came in at £701.80 last year, EV plus older driver = high premiums no matter how much you shop around.
This year he has a much more valuable car, but the biggest factor without doubt is age. The insurance industry dont want to insure the approaching 90's, at least not without requiring eye-watering premiums, at a level which must cause many to give up motoring.

Gibbo is obviously not at that point, but inevitably affordable premiums are going to be difficult to find, but probably still worth it for the freedom car ownership gives.

Mums net surprisingly has a thread on the subject. Kicks off with and example of a premium rising from £1,500 to £5,000.

Well a long phone discussion with Direct Line got the price down to £1256.49 but they stuck at that, I told them not to auto renew, I'll shop around but I'm not confident that I'll get a better deal anywhere else DL have been cheapest for the last four years.

did the meercats one and the RAC but no others yet, got until the 7th October to sort it. DL said they'll hold the new quote until then.

Try Confused too or money supermarket - at least once you've run through / copied and pasted the same info your account is saved for future quotes so less hassle. At those prices, I'd want to exhaust all the possibilities. Good luck on this - scandalous.

I have tried that in the past but the data I put in always seems to need amending for each insurance company.
One problem is that my car is in a secure car park overnight (Asda) but the postcode is never recognised.

Makes very hard work of it so just default to renewal.

Won't that be because there's a conflict between your home postcode and a commercial car park Steve?

Couldn't say but the postcode doesn't appear to exist as far as they are concerned.
Not as though it is in unexplored territory, a mile from the Nissan factory and less from Peter Scott's wildfowl park. Child benefit centre is on the same estate.
