Yes, but you can't
or...
Of course you can.

Solar can have a big part to play in a many a mickle makes a muckle way even in the UK, and its positive to see improvements emerging, I think old Dave covered some solar film development the other day.

Our house building obsession in the UK, appears to be rife for a bit attention. Solar panels are a long established and proven domestic energy generation asset.

Now in 2022, in the limited anecdotal view of NF, I see lots of housing developments all around the Northumberland, and how many have solar panels installed at build time. Dont think I have seen 1.

Its here, but you may want to wait for the film to come out...
Good old wholesome home grown power
"Cleaner and more affordable energy to be made in Great Britain
under bold plans to boost long-term energy independence, security and prosperity."
Suggested Questions for the General Public
Spoiler: show
1. Great we are all for that....so who will we be buying this lovely cleaner and more affordable energy from :?:

2. Isn't Hydrogen production just wasting energy from Electricity you have already produced, or Natural Gas you have extracted to make something that is a less energy-rich and more expensive product, than the electricity or the natural gas you started with :?:
Possible Answers
Spoiler: show
1. er, er, er,....the same licence holding multinational companies as we were buying it from before, but they are going to make it cheaper and more affordable, and won't be seeking to make any windfall profits this time should green energy demand outstrip supply and others are prepared to pay more than we are. No all of our energy production will be bottled and labelled "Made in Britain", from good wholesome British wind farms, British Solar farms, and British Nuclear Power Stations.

2. Yes.

The answer to your question 2 seems to be that electricity over produced by wind tidal and solar that would otherwise go to waste can be used to produce hydrogen and to charge batteries for later use.
There's a lot about it in the fully charged series.

This post from the Hydrogen thread covers the ground on Hydrogen as a storage intermediary in grid storage.

viewtopic.php?p=686057#p686057

Through the pages of this thread many examples have been reported, together with many informative vids from the likes of justhaveathink, and fully charged on the various storage options from grid scale batteries, hydrogen storage, and liquid air, to old coal fired power stations, large battery storage, hot rocks, molten metal, liquid air , gravity, flywheels, pumped hydro, flow batteries etc. etc

Round trip efficiency from electricity in to electricity out, capital costs, useful life , duration time and capacity for storage, frequency of charge/discharge, and expected number charge-discharge cycles all will most likely result in a mix of storage options evolving.

Energy storage equally important as energy generation in any Energy Security Strategy.

Brief recap on what has been considered on the pages of this thread, and a new one which does a bit of a summary at the start

Some stuff on windpower and comparison with other generation types.
Annoying American but there are subtitles so he can be muted.
A couple of unfortunate adverts included but they are easy to skip.

Gave that a full watch through Steve, quite an achievement for a talking head for 20 minutes, but interesting enough.

With the armoury of those Solar panels they have a decent off-grid power station at home.

On our recent trip to Scotland, in a couple of the proliferation of housing developments of unneeded too expensive too large housing I was at least pleased to see solar panels not an add on installation, but part of the built in design at the construction stage.

Its a tech that has been around for years, Musk can even incorporate his solar tiles into a solar roof, and copycats everywhere surely could do a similar thing, and the tech is getting better and more efficient. Housing getting built now without solar panels, or some kind of requirement for off grid generation of energy/ district heating etc is a wasted opportunity.

Here's some suggestions if they are really serious about saving energy.
Downsize and move somewhere smaller, should be able to put something away to put in the electricity meter from the downsizing, and you will make a saving on electricity consumption to boot.
Get rid of one of the cars should be a saving of around £400/month on the leasing payments alone.

I watched it all too, it was rather tiresome but quite informative.
Considering the current increase in el/gas prices it will probably pay for itself fairly quickly.
If he added some wind power so he can generate in poorer weather and at night to offset the diminished solar generation he should at least break even.

I will have to look it up but there seems to be emerging problems with Elon's electric tiles.
