Re: On your Bike
I could never get on with the derailleur gears much preferred the Sturmey Archer four speed wide ratio on my old Rudge Pathfinder which I used daily from twelve years old until I bought my first car at twenty four.

Excellent work Richard
Nicely changing gears are very satisfying!

Re: On your Bike
Modern indexed 'one press' gears with hyperglide cassettes are really easy to use, Gibbo. Not always so easy to set up mind you.... Hub gears are still around, you can now get an 8 speed hub! This one is an 11 speed (x 2...), which is too many really, given the choice I would go with 8 or 9 for cheaper / longer lived parts!Gibbo2286 wrote: 16 Oct 2022, 15:53 I could never get on with the derailleur gears much preferred the Sturmey Archer four speed wide ratio on my old Rudge Pathfinder which I used daily from twelve years old until I bought my first car at twenty four.![]()
Indeed, have been putting up with it not working well for most of this year. Was surprised that a quick adjust of the limit stops and the B screw and it just seemed to work....that can't be right!CitroJim wrote: 16 Oct 2022, 18:33 Excellent work Richard

Ahh! No that helps reinforce my long-held opinion that indexing gears is as much an art as it is a scienceRichardW wrote: 17 Oct 2022, 13:01Indeed, have been putting up with it not working well for most of this year. Even trimming Di2 electronic gears can sometimes be more luck than judgement!

Me in action at the Tour de Tyringham Sportive back in September...
This was a delightful little local Sportive especially to raise funds for Tyringham church...
So successful and well attended - it raised £4500 for the church

Now in the old days these signs would be a welcome sight for those on two wheels touring the Yorkshire Dales
I wonder where they are?

Re: On your Bike
Gosh! That must be very old... The NCU has not existed for years... A lovely find
Back in the mists of time the NCU were embroiled in controversy when they effective killed off mass-start cycle racing in the UK which put us at a huge disadvantage in the European racing arena for many years - hence we only started to win big at the major world tours relatively recently...
It did lead to a big 'underground' TT racing scene in the UK, the early bits of which were carried out under the cloak of some secrecy as the NCU supported no road racing of any kind - which is why we still refer to our TT courses by codes to this day...
Later, the BLRC (British League of Racing Cyclists) was formed to challenge the NCU's stance on mass-start racing and eventually they succeeded..
The NCU and BLRC merged to (eventually) become British Cycling - the organisation responsible for our racing and Olympic success in the 21st century...

There are rather more of them than the AA boxes, but it could be the start of a new spotting thread... https://wingedwheels.info/index.htm

Always a good idea when riding a bike Jim!!

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

I lap up those "familiarity phenomenon" events. Nicely spotted Richard, painted over and in disguise! Surprising how many "Mandolin" tracks crop up on the radio now since I had my mandolin theme on the Pickled Egg Jukebox recently!RichardW wrote: 18 Nov 2022, 15:19 I can't say have ever noticed one of those signs, and then last night I went through a village down the road I have been through loads of times, stopped at the lights, and what did I see??

Occasionally the phenomenon escalates up into an FCF Spooky, where such unlikely co-incidences/ random events in the realms of "what are the chances of that happening?" occur that they just have to be put down to strange forces of which we understand little at work.
As an example...try this one, and read Mick's follow up comment

Re: On your Bike
Looking at Richard's Link, and the Map section of it, I spotted Gifford was one of the locations, and a CTC plaque on the walls of the Tweeddale Arms Hotel (not that Gifford is near the Tweed!).

Re: On your Bike
The anti-social use of electric bikes has been dubbed "the new scourge" by a senior police officer.
South Tyneside councillors have already referred to the vehicles as "silent assassins", with the issue raised again at a community meeting.
Note that 'fleeing' used here is where others would say 'flying'.

We have the same issues and concerns with electric scooters around these parts...
