I'd look "either side" of the suggested size
215/50R16,
215/60R16

Sometimes there's a more common size close enough to cause no issue.

I remember it was common to put 195/50R15 rather than 195/55R15 on the 306 Cyclones as they were about a third cheaper!

A good idea from an economy point of view but bear in mind altering the tyre height will affect the accuracy of the speedo, so make sure you do the distance travelled per revolution of the wheel sum so you are at least aware of which way the reading will be out and by how much so you can adjust the readings in your mind and stay legal when necessary

I think the difference (5% aspect ratio change and calculated 3 and a bit percent circumference change) was small enough to keep you out of trouble but quite right it's worth a check first.

Is that why the police have a 10% leeway on the speed your driving, or is that because old Speedos bounce up and down quicker than a garden rake on a Saturday night?

My understanding is speedometer "only has to be accurate to within 10% but not allowed to under-read" no idea where this nugget stored in my head came from, will have read it somewhere!

There an old wife's tale that the speed cameras, police etc use "10% + 2mph" but I've read stuff saying it's less than that, more than that, varies, etc - so best really go for it if seeking a ticket

Beware - not all Police forces have a tolerance all the time. Thames Valley for example are famous for their 'no tolerance' purges on speeding on the M4, also I recall Northamptonshire announcing a non tolerance policy in the past so definitely driver be aware!!
