Im not 100% sure as to whether or not you can still use the car on the public highway now that is has failed an mot.In the good old days before computers nobody would know that it had failed and your old/current certificate would be legal proof that the car was mot legal. Now that its all computerised the only way i can think of you checking that the car still has a valid mot is to go online and try to tax your car as the DVLA will check its current mot/insurance status. Not sure if its possible to do if the car in question still has a month + of tax but maybe worth a try as Toby, you will have all the relevant information that the DVLA site will require.
As a side note if you were to get a pull by the ministry(VOSA) they can issue prohibitions both immediate and delayed to cars/vans/lorries etc and they will be aware off a failed mot thanks to the wonderful computerisation of the mot system. The old bill in general also have access to this info so its over to you Toby.

Well, a manic weekend that was.

As I say, the Coupe failed its MOT. I assumed that the MOT fail meant the wishbone bushes. Common failure on the 406. How wrong I was....

I bought the bushes and decided to take Jim up on his kind offer of the use of his press.

Up I went, via DickieG, to get them changed. The day did not start well when I realised that I'd forgotten my 'security' bolt key. A way round that was rapidly worked out...

After that, with Jim's tuition and assistance, the o/s wishbone was removed. We couldn't work out why they had failed. They looked fine. So we replaced the rear one and on refitting the arm, discovered the true problem....the balljoint. It had quite a bit of play in it. Now this presented me with a problem, I did not have a replacement balljoint as I'd assumed the bushes were at fault. Luckily, Jim saved the day (again!) with one from his stash, turns out that a Xantia one is exactly the same as for 406s.

Now, we tried to remove the worn balljoint to find that it quite liked where it was and had decided to stay there. The proper tool would not move it. A cold chisel and hammer would not remove it. It was stuck fast. There was no alternative but to remove the entire hub carrier and stick it in the vice and apply heat. This was done and we attempted again. It truly was an epic battle getting that out. Some Italian at Pininfarina clearly loves their thread lock. Even after applying heat and beating it with a cold chisel and a large hammer, it still put up a hell of a fight.

Neither of us were amused by this time, it was far too hot and I had almost passed out from the heat. I really do not deal with it very well at all. On the upside, I have learnt how to remove a hub and balljoint, as well as wishbones.

One thing we noticed on refitting the hub was that there was something wrapped round it. On closer inspection it was revealed to be magnetic tape that must have been picked up from the road. I couldn't believe how much was in there when I unravelled it!

That all done, and the duff number plate bulb replaced too! We packed up and reflected on the job. It also failed on the horn, but that undoubtably worked and always had done, so not sure what happened there.

The drive home was much better, and yesterday I went to Christchurch and myself and MikeT went off to get the alignment done on the Coupe. Interesting seeing how they do it all, they were quite happy for us to stand there watching. After this, it now feels quite tight. Only job left to do now to improve it slightly is two new rear tyres. I'm looking at options and am considering Bridgestone ER300s or some Toyo Proxes T1R at the moment.

Anyway, today the Coupe passed its MOT, so it now has a tad over 12 months ticket on it :D. All that work was worth it and I'm now enjoying her much more and have much more confidence to press on a little.

On the Activa side, not much to report other than it now needs a new n/s mirror after my grandad took it off on a lorry at the MOT station. It's also put a dink in the door :( Mike suggested a few things that I may try to get the Activa back on the road so I shall be investigating them.

Anyways, enough rambling. This blog is getting far too wordy so I shall endeavour to get some pictures after they have both been cleaned.

Many many thanks to Jim for his help on Sunday, as well as putting up with my complete intolerance to heat. Thanks also to Richard for my lovely jack, and to Mike for an entertaining afternoon yesterday, courtesy of the 'Spanish Tuner' Good to see you all again.

Finally, I am planning to attend the DSM rally (if they'll let me in the Coupe ) so look forward to that too.

Thanks John,

Indeed you must, as I say, when you come down this way - pop in. I'd be interested to experience an auto Coupe.

Hi Toby, good job on the MOT work, as you say, you can stop worrying and enjoy driving it now you know it's perfectly safe and sorted.

That £35,000 four-wheel alignment machine was quite some bit of kit, with it's four cameras and twin screens, and the operator was obviously very proud of it. So sensitive that just a draft would send the measured figures up and down.

Did you finish reading that epic tuners thread? It's a right hoot for anyone that hasn't seen it. http://www.lancerregister.com/showthread.php?t=224101
.....but be warned, it is a long one.

Delighted the MOT passed OK Toby :D :D

I'd look to replacing that brake pipe at some point though, lucky the little perishing splits in it were not where the MOT man could see it

Yes, indeed it was an epic battle but we got there! That's the main thing.

I thoroughly enjoyed the day despite the heat but i haver to admit I was a bit the worse for wear yesterday... I've just stopped aching

Well, nearly a month has passed.

Fresh MOT on the Coupe as well as two new tyres. Opted for some Uniroyal Rainsport 2. So far so good...

Nothing much to report other than a scare the other day when I took a corner spiritedly and the Coupe responded with two beeps, two lights and two error messages. Antipollution fault and ABS/ESP fault. I did try to read them but unfortunately could not get dialogue with the DIAG. They've disappeared now and I think it was caused by the battery anyway. Its not the healthiest and at the time the retaining strap wasn't actually holding it in place so I reckon the corner disturbed it and a brief voltage drop caused the faults.

I'm still not happ with the handling though. It's miles better but some days it feels right, more often though it just doesn't feel right at all. I'm beginning to wonder if I can live with it...I really don't want to let it go but if I don't have any confidence in the car (which I don't at present) then I just cannot enjoy driving it, which is the primary aim for me. Thus, it'll have to go though I really am lost for what it would be replaced with. There is now also slight vibration through the car under braking.

Speaking of moving on, I think I've decided its time to let the Activa go, it needs a general clean and tidy up, not to mention a replacement n/s mirror. It's sat outside, not being used and I can't let it rot away, it would be criminal. Once I've got round to sorting it I will post an thread on here. First and foremost, it must go to someone who will appreciate it for what it is, so if anyone is after a Mk2 Activa, there is one here

Uniroyal rainsport2s are supposed to be very good tyres, i was thinking about them for my car when i was needing a pair.

What is it about the halding of your 406 which you dont like?

Im always toying with the idea of an Activa, weather ill end up with one or not remains to be seen. Ill take a look with interest your for sale thread when it appears :)

Just to add, it was my Diag Toby used and there's some doubt of it working correctly as I tried it in Lexia mode on my Xantia and could not get dialogue with Comfort nor Anti-theft ECU's, whereas I could before. All the cable pins buzz out correctly so I'm stumped as to this recent bout of failures.

Have really neglected this blog. I've forgotten so much so not really a comprehensive update..

Cambelt has been done, done over two days with the help of MikeT. Much appreciated Mike.

I was a bag of nerves on startup and think my paranoia got the better of me for two days afterwards but all is fine. The waterpump was weeping and we feel it was close to failure. While there I changed the aux belt and the roller, I went to change the tensioner but had been supplied the wrong part. It had seen better days so I changed that today, a nice easy job that went smoothly for once.

I have noticed the rear bank sounding tappety recently, an oil change is imminent and I hope this sorts it. I shall be running 5w30 for around 500 miles then refilling with some Total Quartz 9000 5w40. A general service is also to be carried out, its just a case of funds at the moment - things keep getting rather tight.

Next purchase is two front tyres. Seems one of mine may be out of shape.

My Activa looks forlorn. I really really want to sort it and get it back on the road but, again, funds dictate I cannot as yet. Lack of funds does have an upside though, its stopping me from buying another Alfa 166 which I keep peeking at.

Away from the cars, I'm off to the Isle Of Wight for a week in November on a work secondment. We have a new branch opening in East Cowes and I, among others, have been chosen to go and help open it and provide training. I think it'll do me good.
