Re: Picture(s) of the day....
We haven't been affected yet which is just as well as what was a hedge when we moved in 51 years ago is now a long row of 40' + high ash trees. If the worst does happen at least we shan't need any logs for some time.

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
I had a chat the other week with one of the managers for a company that is doing a lot of Ash clearance around here. Surprisingly, the glut of Ash wood available hasn't depressed the log market at all and they're still selling it for a good price. I know Ash is one of the best woods for firewood, and it's also used in some furniture, but don't know what else it gets used for.

Morgan Cars, not sure if it still is

Myth-busting: Morgan chassis are made of wood, true or false?
False. One of the great urban myths of the motoring world is that Morgan chassis are made of ash, but they’re not. Morgans have – and have always had – conventional steel chassis, but ash is used for the frame: the structure that supports the body...

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
You could probably give everyone in the world a snooker cue with the amount of Ash being cleared down here, or is it a case that there's only ever enough wood in each tree to make one REALLY good cue ?

Morris minor used ash for the Traveller. Structural on the Minor but not on the Mini Countryman.

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
As you wish
:
I was lucky enough to win play a frame against John Virgo in the annual brewery pro-am challenge and my prize was to have a cue designed and made for me at Thurstons. It was supposed to take 6-8 weeks but the first cue failed quality control after the butt was spliced and they had to start again. So I actually had to wait for 15 weeks before I was able to go and play it in at the factory to ensure it was balanced for me. At the time in 1976 it would have cost £350 which I could never have afforded so I was delighted and used it every day until my eyes finally stopped me playing to my own expected standard and I retired from the game 12 years ago!! Now you wish you hadn't asked!!

Longbows for certain Steve, but I think cricket bats are usually made of willow although they may have an ash handle

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Cricket bats are normally made from willow (specifically from a white willow genuinely called cricket bat willow), while self longbows are made from yew (cut in a way to get both heartwood and sapwood per bow, as heartwood is good for the compression, while the sapwood is good for the tension).

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Incidentally, the way to determine a quallty handmade cue over a mass produced one is to look at the butt splice. If the points are sharp and equal in length it is mass produced. Hand crafted cues have varying length rounded points on the splice.
