I've always wanted to build a jet car.CitroJim wrote:What we really want is a jet powered Activa.. Just imagine
I think it should be done. Shame it couldn't really be called "The Green monster" as a ref to LHM , as Art Arfons already took that name...

Re: Yet another adventure....... Peugeot 407 GT Coupe
brings back some memories, used to watch Art Arfons in his Green Monster, and the Mooneyes thing - seem to recall that being Craig Breedlove but could well be mistaken.northern_mike wrote:I've always wanted to build a jet car.CitroJim wrote:What we really want is a jet powered Activa.. Just imagine

Re: Yet another adventure....... Peugeot 407 GT Coupe
I rather enjoyed Richard Nobles' Book 'Thrust', which was mainly about his land speed records, but did touch upon 'The Green Monster', and Craig Breedloves' various machines, as well as a few others (including 'The Budweiser Rocket').

I haven't forgotten, Jim.
I still think that this is one of the most incredible images in the book;

No, you will be in the camera car ahead of it, with Andy Green trying to keep up!

Thrust 2 and Thrust SSC were fantastic pieces of engineering. I remember sitting up late at night monitoring the supersonic runs on the internet back in 1997. Amazing stuff.
A friend of mine is involved with the Bloodhound 1000mph project. That will be something to see run. If I have the money, I'll go with him when they think they'll go for the record.
IMO, the halcyon days of the LSR was the 60s and 70s when the proper nutcases were involved - mainly the Arfons brothers, Tom Green and Craig Breedlove who competed with each other and took the record from around 440mph up to over 600. Breedlove and Art Arfons both had massive accidents at near or over 600mph (I believe Arfons was at 610mph when a wheel bearing he was using from a tractor failed!).
Breedlove had the cash, but Arfons built Green Monster in his garage, using a scrap jet engine . The engine had been scrapped because of damage caused by ingesting a bolt. Art removed 60 blades out of approximately 1000 in the engine, removing broken blades and ones at 180 degrees, or the pair at +/-120 degrees to maintain balance. He tested it by tying it to trees in his garden, a procedure which drew complaints from his neighbors.
Brilliant.
