I only understand them if they have valves.

Power MOSFETS work just like valves Peter ;) Think of them as a semiconductor KT66...

Speaking of which, here's the big brother of the '66, a KT88 :)

Cossor was a very famous and revered radio and TV company that ceased to exist in 1959 when taken over by Philips...

The KT series of valves were originally made by the MO Valve Company in the UK, a part of GEC. Audiophiles and so on believe these are the very best and they command huge prices as a result... They get very agitated at these Chinese copies bearing old and well-loved British brand names...

KT88's were out of my price range Jim.

I know Cossor, my grandparents had a a TRF with two seperate tuning knobs and a seperate speaker. I replaced it with a more modern Bush - still pre war mind. I wish I had kept the old one, never seen on since. I can remember hearing it on downstairs at my grandparents when I was staying in the bedroom above as a kid, for the 7.00am news I think.

I serviced quite a number of pre war Cossor radios and TV's but they were taken over by Philips in the '50's and rebadged 'Cossor'. The prewar TV's were 15" huge for the time, the CRT was about 3' long and looked as though the neck would break off if you breathed on it, mains EHT too, terrifying to work on.

Peter, loved that :D

KT88s remain out of most of our reach there days... As do the amps they were used in... Quad and Leak amps now go for four figures
Peter.N. wrote: 20 Nov 2020, 00:08 mains EHT too, terrifying to work on.
Mains derived EHT was lethal indeed... Remember those horrid old Visconol capacitors  And to think I cut my (very young) teeth on sets with mains dervied EHT... How I survived is a miracle

I once had a 1950s projection TV with 25Kv mains derived EHT!!!

Happy days 😍

This morning was one of those totally gorgeous clear, crisp, windless frosty ones :D I absolutely love them, especially when I can go for a good run in them :D

I know where the pink Panther is Neil and I've passed him a few times on marathons... Not a regular spot for me as he's at the opposite end of the city and around 10 miles away... MK is now a big place!

Its raining here Jim.

I think the fear of breaking the CRT on that Cossor was worse than the mains EHT. We used to service quite a few Philips projection sets, the main fear with those was having a line or frame collapse with the protection circuit overridden, used to remove a sizeable portion of the screen coating rendering the tube useless, and they had an EHT generator, an oil filled can containing three EY51's.

I have been busy in the garden lifting dahlia tubers and reasserting the wishing well for winter. With the autumn leaves above the fence and the new winter planting in the beds I am quite happy with it:

Where's the black?

Been a good day for work in the garden Mick :) Happily I got all mine done for the winter a couple of weeks ago now but the lawn is still growing... If it stays mild and dry it'll need another trim before winter really asserts itself...

It's been gorgeous down here today and perfect running conditions in the Forest :D

Congrats on your 4400th Post Mick :D

Neil, I like those tree pictures a lot :D As you know, I do love trees and forests... All of my special happy places are either forests or ancient woodland :)

Except, of course, that special, special happy place that finds me lying under certain French cars with spanner in hand ;)
