....and arguably the most well known, and influential of them all turned out to be Robert Louis and his original childrens story "Treasure Island", which has seeped into the imagination across the world. Arrrh Jim Lad! (although like "Its life Jim but not as we know it" from Star Trek was never "said" by Long John Silver in "Treasure Island" (other than by an overacting Robert Newton attempting a West-Country accent!)

The gentleman above is Dudley Dexter Watkins known to me through "Oor Wullie" and "The Broons" and of course "Desperate Dan".

RLS also wrote "The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde", which is a clever study of the personalities of mankind.

RLS had quite a short life, only living until 44.

I am fairly sure that the copy of Treasure Island I was familiar with was that very book! The "Topper" Comic serialised it first in black and white, as the book, in the 1950's, and then in colour in the 1960's. This is an link from June 30th 1962, I think it appeared on the back page...

He also wrote some lovely poetry.. I remember learning Leerie the lamplighter when I was young.

The Lamplighter
Poem

My tea is nearly ready and the sun has left the sky;
It’s time to take the window to see Leerie going by;
For every night at teatime and before you take your seat,
With lantern and with ladder he comes posting up the street.

Now Tom would be a driver and Maria go to sea,
And my papa’s a banker and as rich as he can be;
But I, when I am stronger and can choose what I’m to do,
Oh Leerie, I’ll go round at night and light the lamps with you!

For we are very lucky, with a lamp before the door,
And Leerie stops to light it as he lights so many more;
And O! before you hurry by with ladder and with light,
O Leerie, see a little child and nod to him tonight!

And a very nice version put to music





If you're interested in lighthouses then a visit to the Fraserburgh lighthouse museum should be right up your street. really interesting. I can reccomend it.

Maybe thirty years ago we visited a couple of lighthouses in Scotland. Had a particularly warm welcome at the Mull of Kintyre lighthouse, which, then, you could drive down to - last half mile into a steep valley and near the cliff-edge was quite something. (That last bit of road is now closed, and the lighthouse, like all others, is unmanned.)

After making us tea, we climbed the spiral staircase and up to the lantern, which was still kerosene powered: a gigantic Tilley lamp, with about a 3" globe! Huge curved glass prisms in a brass frame surrounded the globe, and we were told that all this weighed in at several tons. What was surprising then was to be able to rotate this lot by no more than a firm push with one finger - the whole kaboodle floated on a bed of mercury!

Normal drive was provided by a heavy weight that descended down the central void of the lighthouse during the course of 24 hours, and required rewinding manually each day.

Next came the fog-horns.

I never realised that Robert Louis Stevenson, was even related to "The Lighthouse Stevensons" until I watched this...some beautiful aerial shots as well.

Well, there are a couple in the NE where the general public can mooch around, but I should probably let Mike (Xantiamanic) apply the coup de grace as I suspect its his local .

This is the other one, Souter Lighthouse, which is in the hands of the National Trust, and a bit less paint-flakey inside!

....there is another lighthouse you can have a tour of, as part of a boat trip to the Farne Islands from Seahouses.

The Longstone Lighthouse famous locally and maybe further afield for the shipwreck of The Forfarshire and the rescue by Grace Darling and her Father of some of the crew.

Now I usually balk at prices for this sort of stuff, but £4 for a family ticket for 2 adults and 2 children seems good value for a 2-hour trip out from Seahouses....but maybe thats only the tour of the lighthouse bit! (which doesnt seem too bad in any case )

As Mike hasn't stepped in...its got to be this one Richard hasn't it. We have done the climbing up it bit but many years ago now...I seem to remember a precarious bit right at the top to get into the bit where the lamp is?
