Have to admit the homage to "Its life Jim, but not as we know it" does come from that song.

I know that song well. One of my favourite comedy songs

It has the line "Always going forward, still can't find reverse.." and that's one of my life mantras - I never look back and never return to the past. I only ever look forward in life...

Now there are fringe benefits to joining in with the AA Box challenge, and i have to admit that Somerset and the coastline and hills near the Porlock Box are alright, but Cappercleuch near St Mary's Loch in the Borders takes a bit of beating!

80 mph is optimistic... mine belonged to my Grandfather, I recall he reckoned he got it up to 50mph, checked alongside another bike. It's only something like 2.5 HP, but as it's 250cc would need a full licence to ride it on the road

It was quite advanced for its day - there is an oil sump around the engine, and the oil is sucked into the crankcase along the crankshaft via a needle valve so you can adjust the mixture on the run and it keeps the main 'bearing' (actually a 4" long bronze bush) lubricated*.

The clutch has, IIRC, 47 LOOSE ball bearings in it

* or not, as the case may be..... severe wear in the bottom bush was what stopped progress on the rebuild on mine - it needs a new bush making, but it needs a groove cutting inside it and the needle seal cutting for the oil valve, which needed cash, and I didn't have any, or know anyone with the kit to do it. Houses and children have got in the way since, and I still don't have much!! Or time....

Mine also has some 'period' modifications - eg a home made pulley on the flywheel to allow a dynamo to be used (it is fitted with a MagLita - look that one up!); a single exhaust made by butting one of the pipes into the other and brazing them together; a repaired brake shoe which was fixed by riveting a (heavy steel) plate to the side of the (Nice like alloy) shoe; and a hole in the side of the crankcase which was fixed with a bolt with a rubber washer either side. Our definition of hard up these days is nothing compared to the post war years!!

I am determined it will ride again however! Along with the Visa.....

For your unusual one off engineering jobs this used to be the place to go, Hodder died recently but his works is still running, not sure what the new people are doing but you could get pretty well anything made in any metal.

Prym themselves make haberdashery stuff, pins, needles, press studs and the like but they reduced the size of the works and now let out several workshop units to smaller businesses.
