Re: Trivia Investigation Team
Trivia Tangent from Todays County In the Spotlight which is Roxburghshire.
The old Area identifier code used on UK number plates to indicate where a registration was first issued was
KS for Roxburghshire.
On a curious look up on the DVLA website of the registrations KS1 to KS12 I noticed quite a lot were "posh" vehicles in White, not the original vehicles the Plates were issued for back in the early 1900's.
So into the internet search goes KS Wedding Cars and what comes up....
This... Keith Snowden Wedding Cars with much of the Fleet sporting "Roxburghshire" plates.

Re: Trivia Investigation Team
The Metro's journey to the White Cliffs of..
in the famous 1980 advert where a mob of them parked on top of the white cliffs "a British Car to Beat the World", and sent the French, German, Italian and Japanese cars scurrying off in retreat.
So the first identifiable location is some way from the White Cliffs.
Next one is this little Market Place, and narrow street-ed town.

Re: Trivia Investigation Team
So this leaves us with the White Cliffs.
Are they the White Cliffs of Sussex, or the White Cliffs of Kent. Of course they are always changing, that piece the Metro's were on could have fallen into the sea by now it is 40 years since the mob of Metros assembled on the Cliffs.
. Some assistance may be necessary to pin it down with a bit of precision.
There'll be bluebirds over... the White Cliffs of, er, Sussex? Dover council uses wrong picture for iconic scene
Regards Neil

Re: Trivia Investigation Team
Does that look like about 40 years later there could be a massive cliff fall. Possibility that Seaford head may be a contender

Another possible site, the trees and bushes to the left could be where they drove through?

Re: Trivia Investigation Team
Now this may have been creativity and quirkyness beyond the 80's ad agency or in house team.
A white cliff is a white cliff is a white cliff. This particular one, with a nice arch undercutting the promontory is in Normandy...they didnt, did they....park the metros on top of a French cliff pointing towards Blighty.

Re: Trivia Investigation Team
if that is indeed an arch undercut at the base of the promontory , the cliffs around Broadstairs could be a candidate. Probably not quite right as is, but 40 years may have changed the scene

Re: Trivia Investigation Team
Broadstairs was my summer holiday venue between 10 and 14 years of age. The arch in the picture is between Kingsgate Bay and Botany Bay. There used to be a decent sized rockpool on the Botany Bay side which I used to sail my Tri-ang dinghy, featured elsewhere on the FCF, in for hours. Consequently I know that arch very well, I went back to show it to SWMBO about 6 years ago and I was bitterly disappointed to see that the top had collapsed leaving a chalk column. However even in the sixties you were not allowed over the arch onto the promontory because of the risk of collapse so I'm pretty sure no Metros went over there!!

Re: Trivia Investigation Team
Yes I think that is the best shout yet, I was flying over bits of the white cliffs of the Isle of Wight recently, but didnt come up with as clear a sight as that. We cant confirm of course but thet looks spot on to me...Hampshire's day in the spotlight could well have got the Metro's on top of the white cliffs if only we had known!

Well done Mick, satisfies me

Re: Trivia Investigation Team
10 pages on how the first ever special issue Commemorative Stamps for Christmas 1966 actually made it out there in into the hands of the general public in December 1966, and the overcoming of convention/the establishment/red tape etc by a persistent Postmaster General in the form of one AWB at the time to make it happen.
One objection..."The snowman's hat looks like it'is tickling the Queens nose"
They have made Hollywood oscar winning movies about less interesting and more contrived stories

Just a wordy link for now...from the Postal Museum!
