..now if that happens to be 472 Davie, you could combine it with a celebratory cheese!

Set off too late from Manchester though and with an eta of around midnight back home, gave the lakes detour a miss this time. Didn't help myself by taking the m62 in the wrong direction and ending up warringtonish, before joining the m6 north.
I am saying north but it was astonishing and irritating that with a low sun in the west the m6 north must head west and even south west at times as it snakes it's way north. Intermittent localised downpours, spray off the road, while at the same time driving directly into the sun made for a testing drive.h

Did you grab the one near the Mere then? (A556) as thats a stone throw from where you were!!!
If not it's definately one to grab on a quiet midweek midday as its literally on the corner of the crossroads and the A556 is not an easy road to stop on!!

Re: The FCF AA BOX Summer Challenge 2016-17 left to be bagged!
Just looked at the map Stu, probably was no more than 10-15 miles away at one point, now that's well detourable for me
. It was much later than I anticipated leaving Manchester, so this time didn't get there but now I know roughly where it is I will save it for another time.
One other unlikely tourist spot which I hope to visit out of pure curiousity around the North West is, as far as I can tell, the only public house in the entire world.....and I mean the entire world......that is called "The Pickled Egg".
Its in St Helen's, if it hasn't been condemned yet.

.....It don't look too inviting from the picture

No 1 son wants to go fossil hunting just down the road from the St Mary's Loch box, so sure I will get that one over the summer.

Thats great Richard, just plough through any objections to stopping and taking a picture of the AA Box! and be prepared with a response to the difficult question "Dad.....why are you taking a picture of that boring AA Box?"RichardW wrote:No 1 son wants to go fossil hunting just down the road from the St Mary's Loch box, so sure I will get that one over the summer.

Thats Scotland, Wales and the North-West stirred up......whats going on in the West Country?

I was expecting 137 to have been toppled by a forum heavyweight before now!

I might bag the Porlock one next week. Spending a week down that way sorting out dad's affairs so may get a bit of a chance... maybe even on my bike!

Re: The FCF AA BOX Summer Challenge 2016-17 left to be bagged!
On the subject of old AA Artifacts, I spotted this 'hamlet' sign down in Somerset whilst out on a bike ride this morning...
I've know this sign since I was a baby... I believe they're now very rare and were put up just after the war to replace signs taken down to hinder the enemy..
Maybe a new spotting competition for all those left in place?

Re: The FCF AA BOX Summer Challenge 2016-17 left to be bagged!
...and why not Jim, I quite fancy another little interesting voyage of discovery of random places
This was the first ever.....

New thread started
Regards Neil

So only 65 in situ around the Country, unless there are still some out there waiting to be discovered....cvphm.org.uk/AAVillageSigns
From 1906 to approximately 1932,The Automobile Association erected nearly 30000 signs in villages and towns across Great Britain. Most were removed during the war when a Nazi invasion seemed highly likely. At the end of World War II, only 600 or so were left and today there are around 65 still in situ around the country. Many more have survived in museums and private collections.
These pages illustrate the diversity and show some of the obscure signs so far unearthed. There is an opportunity below for you to report a sign or send a digital image for posting here..

Neil, that's really interesting and thanks immensely for finding out their history
Never knew they were so rare!
Right, game on for spotting the remaining 65 then
