Many years ago now I had a series of Hillman Imps.
In one I had a rubbish tape player that just sat on the parcel shelf, was never actually fixed in the car.
I also had a two-hour tape of Neil Young's "Decade" on auto-reverse, this tape went continuously for about two years until a GS took the place of the Imp.
Put it in my expensive HiFi tape deck and it chewed it up in seconds

I mention this as I have just read that Neil is divorcing his wife Peggy
She who is the subject of this song:




Neil is one of the few male musicians I listen to.

Tarja Turunen is quite spectacular!

Just been listening to this Swedish duo (sisters) recently, they make some excellent covers, like this one:



Patti Smith is in the audience and can be seen crying, she must have been quite moved by it - tough old bird (saw her at The Sage not long ago).

If you should like that, they do an excellent cover of America



Paul Simon in the audience gives them a standing ovation, while the king of Sweden just looks confused.

I'm actually fortunate (usually!) in being one of those people who can constantly hear music in my head.

It makes a choice of external tunes, less imperative. Except when (for example) DJ Brain is playing

Just managed to get my phone paired with the car, which has advantages and disadvantages, one disadvantage was picking my son and his girlfriend up from Newcastle. Set the phone to Waze and he hadn't received the text I sent telling him I was on my way so he tried to call me, car answered but he couldn't hear me. Had to stop the car and turn it off and use the phone the old fashioned way.
I hate using the phone at the best of times.
Continued but most of the exits from the A1 were closed, as were some of the roads near the Arena, so a ten minute trip too 45 minutes.

I have a decent playlist on the phone comprising of most of the previous selection plus the Pretty Reckless (Taylor Momsen*), Imelda May, A Tergo Lupi, Within Temptation and Agnes Noble.

*Interesting history for her but it is the name that amuses me, Swedish for The VAT!

Having read through the thread I can make a minor contribution:
I don't recognise a single name in Steve's list!
In our house R4 was called Radio Bore so I was banned from listening to it. I used to hide away for Just a Minute and the like!!
My Mum loved Jim Reeves and I take after her in that respect!
I hardly ever have music in the car, Talksport is my accompaniment when driving, but if SWMBO is with me I sometimes allow a spell of Mellow Magic!! No CD's or MP3s for me!!

I was stuck in the doctor's yesterday, got there far too early and was treated to an hour of "Smooth Radio" or somesuch. Like the Chinese water torture.

I tend to listen to Radio 4 when going to - from work and during my lunch break - there's normally some excellent stuff on just after The World At One and before the dreaded Archers* When R4's not suitable I'll listen to GHR. I used to listen to Radio 2 but haven't for quite a while now as they don't seem to want me as a listener. On the rare occasions I actually put on some music of choice in the car it's normally a compilation to while away the hours.
I'll listen to music 'properly' at home but there's no real go-to musicians I've got - it'll be either whatever I've recently purchased and needs listening to, or a somewhat random choice from the Bobins record library. Yesterday evening I put on Tracey Thorn and then Boards Of Canada from the stack of ones needing listening to. There's still Sigur Rós, Lloyd Cole, Robert Palmer, Warren Zevon, The Cure, Sting, Eyeless In Gaza and a whole host of others awaiting listening..... then I can revert back to the some thousands of CDs and vinyl in the collection
I tend not to have music on as a background distraction - I either want to listen to it properly, or not at all.
