Home again, but a fantastic clear run back into Stansted. Who can name the roundabout?:

Well your pilot may have gone a bit off course over West London but one of the finest roundabout names in Britain is...

The Hangar Lane Gyratory

To be honest cant even pick out a roundabout! Needs circling in red!

I believe that is just out of the bottom of the picture Neil, but a cracking guess. I have circled it in yellow as it stands out better than red, and having told you about the Gyratory it will only take a very quick look to discover it is The Target Roundabout on the A40 where I believe the A312 (don't quote me :-D ) crosses the A40 and I believe the dark area just above it in the picture is Northolt Aerodrome with Heathrow away to the left. The M25 can be picked out crossing the M40 further up. It was so clear, probably because of the 80mph winds which had made us 3 hours late in all!!

I think this is about right!!:

Isn't that picture 90 degrees out from North?

That depends on your navigational standards Gibbo! Some would say it is 270ish degrees out from North, especially pilots!! :-D

I was just looking at the location of the M4/A4 out of London to the west, a route I've travelled many times. :)

By the time you have travelled 125 miles the emergency will probably be over (or have escalated to an international emergency)!

I have had trouble deciding the picture for my 1000th post because there are many options to choose from. So I eliminated the Morris 1000, as the one I had, certainly didn't deserve celebrating. The 1000 candle pictures are everywhere but hold no direct link to me reaching 1000 posts. I gave serious consideration to the Midland Compound No.1000 which I had a model of and which I saw in the railway museum but decided I should try harder for something more appropriate to the occasion. I will put up the runner up at a later date but suffice it to say that it is a great car with 1000 on it but not French and not directly linked to my event. So the very ordinary but at the same time perfectly subtle response to Neil's googly is: :-D :-D :-D

Congratulations on your 1000th Post Mick. Now as a special treat I have dug this out of the Picture of the Day Archives. You see the French "popular" card game "Milles Bornes" ie 1000 milestones is pretty much a copy of the original US game Touring. The artwork is far too modern though....this was the inspiring artwork from the copy of Touring I was used to as a boy!
NewcastleFalcon wrote: 20 Jul 2016, 07:07 Anyone play this card game in their formative years?

I always remember the artwork, and the one for "Out of Gasoline" seems evocative of a sweltering day when the last thing you need is to be stranded and out of gasoline by the roadside.

As I have learned today it was called "Touring" an American game first patented in the very early days of motoring in 1906, and it wouldn't surprise me if the pack we played with as children was nearly as old as that!. Much later in the 1950's a French Game "Milles Bornes" (a thousand milestones) was very similar but much more modern looking and colourful. I love the artwork of the original "Touring" cards though, and remember them fondly to this day.

Thanks Neil. I have to say the link from my first choice picture to your archive selection is quite spooky!! Especially now that I can confirm my runner up picture would have matched the french version of the game in terms of period!: :)
