Re: Common Scams Section
It wasn't the stamps that were bought from eBay but an item posted to me that I bought on eBay and the sellers put on stamps bought from the post office that were then deemed to be counterfeit and I was charged for them to be released.
They looked perfectly OK.
The other one was from my doctor.
Clearly it was the PO getting it wrong.
I may still have the envelopes here.
Edit: found while looking for something completely different.

Re: Common Scams Section
I believe one of the most clever scams was perpetrated by Steve Comisar of Beverly Hills, California. He is currently serving time in Federal Prison for a separate fraud case.
Comisar would run ads in the national magazines offering a “Solar Powered Clothes Dryer” for only $49.95. His ads stated that the “Scientifically Proven Space Age Clothes Dryer” was guaranteed to work for five years provided there was adequate sunlight.
The devices were described as “Uses no batteries or electricity” with “Free Shipping”. The National Enquirer was a favorite publication for his ads.
Unsuspecting customers would purchase the clothes dryer only to receive a length of clothesline.

Re: Common Scams Section
May or may not be a scam but looks suspicious to me.
A few days ago I received notification from Screwfix that I had won a hammer drill from them.
I have bought a fair amount of stuff from them and done a couple of surveys and been entered into a lottery for 'prizes'. I had been looking for a new hammer drill so not too unusual.
Clicked the link as it appeared to be kosher, I get a lot of mail from Screwfix and Toolstation.
Took me to a survey site. Couldn't be arsed with that at the time, looked again yesterday and the site was 404'd.

Sounds dodgy to me Steve... May be the usual one of enter all your details so we can send a prize to you sort of thing - which they would already have if you were an existing customer...

Re: Common Scams Section
The other day I received a distinctly dodgy-looking email from Ofcom about my amateur radio licence that turned out to totally genuine; just very badly put together...
It's the second time they've done that and has attracted quite a few posts in the relevant forums...
