Will try and make time for a quick Diagbox session tomorrow evening and see what's logged.

Will read the rest of this thread in the morning:

Seems AliExpress is flogging new units cheap
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008 ... Redirect=y
£48

eBay has some new ones at £150+
https://ebay.us/m/YXcNrk

Elsewhere £250-£350. Quite a price variation!

Parts thread still down / locked it seems

I've read through the above. Interesting differences to what reported there:
My instances of "Electrical fault, Have vehicle repaired" a few months back were brief: driving along the motorway, beep, message appeared, sometimes accompanied by the SERVICE light coming on. Then maybe 30 seconds later, SERVICE light off again. On occasion would do this maybe as many as 5 or 6 times. Then nothing again for maybe a couple of weeks. Hasn't done it recently.

Didn't do either of the above during my breakdown yesterday.

Mirrors told as usual, ignition switches on (start stop button pressed) dash lights as expected up to and including glow plug light extinguishing and then the brief "bit of silence" where starter isn't triggered.

The thread confirms it doesn't need coding if Battery Protection Unit is changed.

Seems to be a couple of parts numbers:
9675350280
And
9675350380

No chance of a Diagbox session before work, hopefully at lunch time today. Holding off ordering anything as yet.

If I get away with £150, I think that'll be not bad.

This particular post is very interesting:
viewtopic.php?p=833038#p833038
Suggests a "link" between front and rear halves of the unit could be the culprit. Seems odd, if that is it, why no-one has drilled that out and installed a small bolt to make the electrical connection between front and back!

Interesting also, no-one seems to have latched onto this hypothesis!!

Having reread your breakdown account Matt you don't actually mention checking the starter motor. Have you tried a direct jump lead to motor terminal to prove the motor? :)
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

This thread seems to suggest the difference between the two part numbers is (at least!!?!) one 70 amp and one 80 amp fuse positions not used one of the two variants:

Morning Mick,

Not tried that as yet. Starter is only "medium buried" (unlike if it was a 1.6 where it's in the back if the block, the 2.0 it's on the front) access still a bit tricky to get at the terminals.

There's no characteristic "Click" of the solenoid in the engine bay and with multimeter on the battery terminals, no significant volt drop when the "bit of silence" happens.

Also need to think if I want to "just make the starter spin a bit" which could be just crack on with jump leads, OR see if car will start. Not sure if the safety nannying "push the clutch pedal to allow starting" would get in the way. Doable with an assistant but obviously I'll need very much longer arms and eyes on stalks to press clutch pedal and hot wire starter at same time :rofl2:

The 1.6s used to blow the starter fuse when they got a bit old - worth a quick check (under bonnet). I would check for power at the solenoid when start button pressed. A jump lead (or screwdriver  ) at the starter should prove if there is life or not - this will bypass the nanny state clutch switch etc!

Excellent, is starter fuse one of those in the battery protection module or elsewhere?

Thanks RichardW, I'll get a bit brave with screwdriver or multimeter whilst Start button pushed.

The above faults look like Battery Protection Module to me - any thoughts against (understanding is in advance of starter fuse check or power to starter testing)

That seller will be one of the high-volume Chinese importers / resellers. The Glenfield site is a mega warehouse where the stuff is turned around. No real issues with that concept, only that it'll be made of finest Chineseum and may or may not be as good as the image and description show 8-[ :? It'll be exactly the same product as listed by numerous other near identical sellers though.
