Hello sir, I know that this post of yours was almost 10 years ago, but if you can still help me, if you remember the details of “priming” that pump?

How do you get diesel in it?

I’ve fitted mine in, cranked it a lot by now, not aware i was supposed to prime it, but no fuel is coming out of the fuel lines of the injectors..

Normally these pumps have a rubber hand pump for manual priming. This is certainly the case for my partner’s ZX.

Basically pump that until it has good resistance. Sometimes it helps to have an assistant who can pump the bulb whilst the car is being cranked.

To add, with the ignition turned on to open the electrovalve to allow the diesel to flow

Thats really strange, mine doesn’t have any rubber pumps, on the pump itself nor on any of the hoses..

Also my question is, since Ive had the pump opened, do those pumps have their own timing?

For example the position of the drive shaft and the rotor.. Does it matter how it is aligned?

Also, could I attach a rubber pump anywhere to help extract all the air outside of the pump, and where would I put it?

If you have taken the pump off and reinstalled then it needs timing. I am pretty sure. Someone else may confirm this.

If that turns out to be the case, I would argue that if you didn’t know this and took it off the car then the chances of you getting it working again are slim. You’ll need to get it to a diesel specialist and get them to refit the pump and time it.

I have all the tools for doing it but it is a specialist job which can be done by the home mechanic but it’s a bit a job I would take on readily.

To my knowledge the (XUD9 and) XUD11 Pumps are on a bracket with slots, timing can vary by rotating the pump on the slots, so yes that should be set up.

I believe theres a bolt that comes off the end of the pump, into the hole that is revealed allows a rod to be inserted, a dial indicator lets you time the pump and hence do the adjustment.

However! I also recall Jim describing "tuning it by ear" - adjusting the pump with it running and setting it when it sounds, well, right!

Let me dig see if I can find it again.

Not a quite from Jim, but Wheeler also very knowledgeable. Mentioned here:

That's exactly right. There is knurled nut from memory and you remove and stick your DTI in. A diesel specialist can do it by ear. My understanding is Van Gogh was not particularly good at tuning Citroens.
