It's a long and detailed read, and absolutely not to everyone's cup of tea so don't be surprised if it doesn't inspire......... and as you'd expect from the comments section, it's a case of 'Oh no it didn't'

An aside though, ever since my involvement with standby power generation, back in my BT days, I have always been aware of precautions against power failure. My house has a total of 29 nightlights dispersed throughout in appropriate places but generally disguised as ornaments or art works. There are four lighters strategically placed around the house such that I am always within a few yards of one. Thus when the power does fail and we are plunged into darkness I can get us going again without rummaging through drawers and cupboards as my Mother used to have to do!!

I think it well worth being prepared rather than risking an accident trying to find the necessary!! :

I have a boatload of those and standard candles, been here for years and never lit.
They are just decorative and were never intended/expected to be used for power failures.
Keep intending to make hot air balloons with them.

I can't remember when we last had a power cut. Not in all the time that we have lived on Wearside.

Spot on, Mick. A simple and unobtrusive precaution but very sensible. As you might imagine, I have a surfeit of torches here at Bobins Towers

How many people would stumble to find their phones to use its torch if the power went off (for whatever reason) when it's dark outside ?

One a year isn't out of the ordinary here, due to line or equipment failure rather than a national / regional issue though !

This is just in our area. I noticed last year that the Northern Echo published daily both expected and unexpected power outages, mostly around Teesside.
Northern Powergrid have a web page with up to date info on outages.

That would be the people whose phones were on charge at the time no doubt!!!

I think being in a rural area with limited redundancy in the power distribution puts us at a disadvantage here. A few years ago the 'leccy board started heavy-duty Napalming any over hanging trees or ones threatening the power lines in an attempt to reduce power disruption - it seems to have worked as we get less black and brown-outs than we used to.

I was feeling smug as I have a street light attached to my house and rarely bother putting lights on during the night (after bed-time).
Then realised the flaw in that

Well done Bobins. Did you read many of the comments? Definitely interesting to the likes of me. It shows to me that we have deconstructed more infrastructure than we should have just mothballed and waited. This is a plate spinning scenario of epic proportions. NESO's own predictions were obviously under by a long chalk. Does no one do full risk analysis anymore?
