On your Bike

Oooh i know the exact feel of those cuts and scrapes! More frequently on the elbow creases on the arms! Buddy and I hit the local woods this morning, lots of branches down, sadly, of the dozen we moved, only 2 had been by mother nature..... Still resulted in a double run down one, first clearing, second k owing its safe! Lots of mud, lots of slipping and sliding =Huge grins!
My rear mech seems to have gone a bit wrong mind, clutch wasn't clutching much! Is now on the bench to sort out after I've built a wheel for a customer,

Today I went to buy a secondhand MTB so I could join my 9 year old son on the local trails when my ankle is back to full fitness after the surgery I had a few weeks ago..

Little sod. He commandeered it immediately so I'm still looking out for one for me..

Just what I was about to say, even though my two sons and one of my grandsons are mountainbikers/downhill racers.

One of the blokes I worked with was on an MTB in the Baltic(Swedish Navy), some hair-raising tales to tell.

first time out for 3 weeks and what a day to choose!

this is normally a gravel track and 3 weeks ago you couldn't see the Tower....trail runs from left - right of where pic was taken


after 45 mins i was surprised the Whyte was not clagged up, wetter than i thought...


13 miles and cold wet feet and shins, a warm up for tomorrows group ride in the wetter forecast conditions

Could've done with some mudguards on that sorta terrain. That's a tiny little front Freewheel and a huge rear top cog; I guess the Gears on that are set up specifically for low speed stuff; eg Hill-Climbing & Mud-Plugging.

Quite different to what I'm used to: 42-28 Top and a 52-14 bottom with a 700c or 27" wheel

They're not destroying forests they're growing trees as crops, just like wheat and barley, it just takes longer but they have then to harvest them and re-plant.

the de-forestation is planned cropping, just could have picked a better time of year though!
the Chase is at the moment subject of a lot of proposed changes, mainly money - motivated, fence off large areas in the name of Conservation, let farmers graze the land and hey-presto no responsibility for the upkeep...
closing Car Parks - the smaller remote ones, enlargening the main ones and making them paid ones, all to make the trip to the Countryside an 'experience' a la Alton Towers etc
plenty of mentions for improvements for Horses, walkers, dog owners, not much for Cyclists like myself who have no interest in doing the 'official' trails - Follow The Dog, Monkey Trail or Stile Cop DH runs

anyway, todays Pic of the ride could have been anywhere.....

That's my sort of bike, except for the dangly bits that they use for gears, put a four speed wide ratio Sturmey Archer on it and it would be perfect.
