Just an Update,: replaced motor with the ecu and everything is back to normal, so to recap if the ratling comes from mechanical part of the rack you jest replace the mechanical part and keep the ECU with motor.

Thank ypu all for your fast response and knowledge.
PS the ratlnig was feelable on the steering whilst driving ove small uneven roads, I wish I had a video.

When you took the ecu off was there any oil inside the rack? and was it an easy job to swap them over? Im having problems with knocking on my rack on my 2015 c4 grand picasso 1.6 eHDI. I can find lots of used racks for sale but none have the exact same numbers that ate shown on the sticker on my current rack. So i feel like i will also have to swap the ecu over as what ever i buy will probs not be compatible

There should be no oil inside the rack, they’re just greased. So there’s nothing to leak out when you dismantle it.

Next question is what exactly did you have to take off before you could remove the old rack. Was it a case of strip bumper off and then remove everything connected to the sub frame? Or os there a way to loosen a few bolts engine mount etc then slightly lower the sub frame to create space without damaging other parts
