No guarantee that reapplying the firmware will resolve anything if it's an internal issue or the hard drive is failing, but it won't cost you too much to do a CF card replacement as per the guide to see if this resolves it. Note: CF Cardc is recommended as it uses a compatible ATA command set for the PATA drive. Anything too fast or modern like an SSD or faster CF Card won't work for long due to TRIM not being supported by the OS.

Depends what the problem is. It’s not always the internals but a corrupt HDD.
It’s easier and cheaper to try a CF Card replacement first. Reanimating the unit is not an option for most people who don’t have access to the software.
