I can tell you that on the earlier models it can be automatic:
On the earlier model circuit, there is the earth the supply and another wire - likely the control wire from the BSI to turn the supply off.The rear screen demisting-defrosting control (2) only operates when the engine is running.
To start the rear screen demisting function:
Press switch (2)
The warning lamp lights up
The rear screen demisting - defrosting control.
N.B. : The rear screen demisting-defrosting function is switched off automatically to prevent an excessive consumption of current.
N.B. : When the engine is switched off before the end of the rear screen demisting-defrosting, this resumes when the engine is switched on again.
To stop the rear screen demisting-defrosting function:
Press switch (2)
The warning lamp is switched off
