They also have a car checker SMS system, in that if you enter the reg and send it to the text number it will reply with the (Asda) oil that is most suitable.

I wonder if only certain branches carry the 5ls, that would explain why I've not seen any recently - perhaps only the larger ones?

Update:

& so it proved to be - had a look in a larger branch &, yup, a choice of oil in 5l's, although only one at what I'd consider a sensible price: 10/40 for £16!

Tried that text thing &, as I expected - no response! Why, 'cos the Xantia's number doesn't seem to be on whatever database companies use.

I have noticed that Castrol supply oil in 1L and 4L quantities. I have also noticed that (certainly vehicles I have had usage of) car seem to require around 4.3L oil. The cynic in me thinks that the oil companies are (as usual with large corporations) taking advantage of their captive clientele.

4L is just a ploy to get the shelf price down.
How many owners actually change their own oil nowadays?
I usually buy Repsol 20W/50 diesel spec mineral in a 4x5L carton, at about €20 a tub. Gets used on both cars, every 6000mi/10,000km. Recently started buying it online from Mister Auto, where there are non-stop discounts.

I'm using a thicker 15W40 mineral oil in my 1.9D DW8 to try to lessen the crank shaft oil seal leak I have. It seems to be alright, and leaks a little less. Don't have to worry about replacing it every few thousand miles as I go through a full oil change every 6 months or so :? .

I'm considering biting the bullet and just getting the seal replaced.

I thought the idea was to design 1 4l container that wasn't obviously smaller than the 5l - & sell it at the same price!

Interestingly though, I see Repsol oils are available in 4 AND 5l's.

Not sure about 20/50 in "our" engines though - outside the tropics/N. Africa.

Mineral oil doesn't creep like synthetic, which is probably more important than viscosity, although the C15 lives on 15/40 as a matter of course - & the only reason the Xantia got 10/40 at the w/e was (a) it was all that was available (AND turned out to be cheaper) at the time (b) it IS January!

I use personally 5w50 which is a HC synthetic oil something between both semi and full syn.

on the race TU engines I use 10w60 with zinc if no catalyst is possible.

Found that although, generally, oil's more expensive sur le continent - often €40 - 50+ for 5ls - Norauto actually have some budget 15/40 for €9.95, I suspect it's re-refined, bit like that that el cheapo 20/50 we can see on the shelves, particularly in supermarkets, D-i-Y sheds & the like.
Anyway, definitely in the "if it seems to good to be true . . . " category. Got a result in Auchan though, 5l of their own 15/40 "diesel" oil was €13.50; bought 2, so all set, probably for the rest of the year's oil changes for C15 AND Xantia (assuming the latter doesn't use any, as too early to tell).

That IS an extraordinary price, especially as it includes p&p - which can't be cheap for 20ls of oil. Means it's hardly worth me getting a "drum" from Mole Valley Farmers (my local source of oil in bulk) - not that I can remember if I ever actually checked the specs. of tractor oil, to see if it's suitable.

Must admit I'd never heard of Mannol - 'til this evening when I was looking at the price of LHM, as I'd forgotten to get some in France (just as well, it's twice the price GSF are knocking out the Total product for.

Curiously, that €9.95 15/40 from Norauto is €14.99 in Auto 5 (which seems to be their Belgian operation)

They do a whole range of oils. worth looking up. This is pretty well the same oil as I used to get from Trago's some years ago but its even cheaper than that.

I've split the last few posts into a new thread to avoid confusion, as it veered off onto transmission oil.

I use drums as I run 6 cars 2 for main use 4 for hobby. It all uses 5w40 and 10w60 with or without zddp depending on catalyst or non catalyst. As for the diesel engines I run 5w40 HX7.

I have one 407 hdi runs on 5w30 dpf oil without a problem even with 250k mls +

I've had a drum of the Mannol stuff in 5w30 variant:
(from eBay "my purchases" )
(from eBay "my purchases" )
It's shot up in price since I got it as if I click through to the current listing it says £63.99!

There's some of it in the 206 DV6 at present - I know it's not a low SAPS version but was mid oil change on Sunday afternoon when I realised all the 5l bottles I had in stock (accumulated Eurocarparts own brand fully synthetic when on good offer) were 5w40 stuff to suit the Coupe instead

Picked up some 5w30, C2 spec from GSF on Monday, £30.99 for 5 litres, so intend a short change on the current "wrong" stuff maybe next weekend or the one after then back to the C2 stuff for a normal duration.

In my Xantia XUD9BTE i run 5W-40 in the winter and 10W-40 in the summer. Both recommended by Total
10w-40m is a bit too thick for winter use, as it can get to -30*C (mostly around 0*- -15*C)
But it makes for a quieter engine in the summer.

I ran my mk1 C5 on 0W-40 in the winter (OK according to handbook), it did consume a tad bit of oil on a long trip in warm april..

Oils are generally a bit of an "religion", i stick to what oilguides and manufacturer recommends

Engine oil seem to be very cheap in the UK.. If i order a good brand oil (5L) from germany/poland its like 35£ + shipping
A modern oil in the autoparts store can be over 100£/5L, many main/OE dealers can charge around 30£ a litre!!
I have various repair handbooks and wiring diagrams for C5 mk1, Xantia, XM, Berlingo and C3 mk1.
I have Lexia/Diagbox (Sweden) and Servicebox/sedre
