Thanks all, my experiences of V6 are that they are quite lazy and not as preppy as a 4-cylinder...V8 are even lazier and don't seem to get off the line very easily (potentially because of the weight more than anything).
I don't think the CX is frugal, to be honest though, I have not really tested it because the odo doesn't work...but it feels thirsty...
Why do people prefer V6 (or HDI and TD) over the 2.0 CT?

That could be because of the Auto gearboxes most V.6's are bolted too.my experiences of V6 are that they are quite lazy and not as preppy as a 4-cylinder

My 406 V6 made me think I'd like a V6 Activa, it was great for pootling about in 5th and the instant torque and Also it was great revving out towards the 7k RPM soft limiter and it was good on fuel, certainly better than my current S60 T5.
Shame they never made it available in this country.
My dad had a 1.8 16v Xantia Temptation when I was little and a S2 Activa and both felt a bit slow, the 1.8 if anything seemed quicker, but the later 210hp V6 would have made it a superb thing.

Re: Why do people prefer V6 (or HDI and TD) over the 2.0 CT?
My Activa started off as a TCT and now sports a V6 mated to the manual box.
The TCT wasn't bad but it lacked power, when the boost was fiddled with it went ok but still sounded thrashy when you were pushing on. The V6 with the manual gearbox does 0 - 60 in 7.5 seconds, and has more torque across the entire rev range then the TCT, it sounds better, uses less fuel and in my opinion it just finishes the Activa off. It makes it the car it should always have been.
The extra weight up front isn't really an issue as the TCT was a cast iron block, the ES9 V6 engine is all aluminium. It is slightly heavier but not to the point you notice it with a detrimental effect. There's one corner near home that always caused the inside front wheel to spin when I had the TCT engine in mine, with the V6 it doesn't spin and gets around the corner with ease.
Personally I'd never own another TCT powered Activa, however, my Activa had covered 53k miles (now on 57k miles) when I spent around £4k doing a ton of little jobs and the V6 conversion was carried out. I also sacrificed a V6 Xantia to do it.

The only xantia I would buy now would be a v6 auto. However there would be little point while I have the 407 coupe behaving itself. Its a great car for me being comfy and having the v6 hdi auto. It hardly gets used, it has only do e 750 miles in over 3 months since its been sorted. It fulfills the comfy cruiser for me, and its not even too heavy on fuel being remapped.
