Just an update, ok the brake is now fixed, turned out the new cylinder head had a brass grub screw in it were the pump goes at the end of the cylinder head. Removed this and have brakes again. As far as the black smoke is concerned EGR for our vehicle is no longer available from Citroen/ Peugeot and there’s no non genuine available so managed to find a decent secondhand one also fitted new heat washers under the fuel injectors and wound the spring plate up on the diesel pump under the diaphragm none of which has made any difference and so it still smokes like a train.

Even if you blank the EGR off, which is illegal, it still wouldn't give black smoke out of the exhaust. Is there a DPF fitted to the vehicle?? If there is then maybe a previous owner has punched holes through it hence the black smoke.

Just a quick update the brake problem now solved, removed the brake pump from the new cylinder head and there’s a brass grub screw which needs to be removed before fitting the pump. The black smoke problem has improved, turned out the diesel pump timing was half a tooth to advanced. So miles better however it still smokes for a little bit when the engine is cold when you accelerate. Not sure if the pump needs to be tweaked a bit more or the spring platform under the LDA diaphragm needs the be raised a couple of clicks apart from that all good. Although it’s never going to break the land speed record Peugeot Boxer 1f600
