But shouldn't this have a painted grille? I thought only A35 models had chrome?

No it's the other way round, the A30 had a chrome grill and the A35 a painted grill with a chrome surround and flashing indicators, Jim's dad would know. :)

My sincere condolences to you and your girls Jim. Lean on your girls for support just now and in the coming months. Rest easy now, I know the stress elderly relatives that are ill are, your dad is at peace now, I firmly believe in good souls passing on to a better life with no ills or pains. Give him a good, happy send off when that time comes.

He surely would... Back in the day he was to BMC small A-series what I am to Xantias....

As a kid I remember him spannering many A30s, 35's and 40s (including Somersets) with his pals... Like father, like son...

As a kid I always thought an A40 Somerset was just for people who lived in Somerset (as we did) and this belief was reinforced by me being aware of the A40 Devon and other BMC 'County' cars...

I don't recall pondering what would happen of you moved to say, Wiltshire... Knowing me though I must have done...

Have just read your post, Jim, while here in the UK. So sorry to hear of you losing your Dad, and one that gave you so much. Went through much the same with mine in 1998 - he was a high-voltage electrical engineer who spent most of his time designing vast transformers, in Hayes. Like you, he taught me all about batteries, power, wood and metal, and then about old things Rover. I surprised him with Citroen, which he was fascinated with. Clearing out his old shed/workshop in Ealing was hard; a good few of tools there were the ones I'd played with as a child and teenager. So many fond memories, to be proud of.

Thoughts are with you.

Sounds like both our dads were very similar Chris :D All my memories of him are good now and that's good..

We spent the day driving down to Somerset and back yesterday to do all the formalities... It's all done now, right down to all funeral arrangements made...

Driving conditions in the fog yesterday were bloody atrocious, jolly glad we were in Gabriel :)

Yesterday we celebrated dad's life at his funeral and what a really special occasion it was. We all gave him a tremendous send-off and the day will live on for the rest of my life and I guess a few present as well...

Seems I scored a couple 'firsts' in the history of Taunton Crematorium yesterday with my choice of tribute music to dad and a remark I made about dad's Nursing Home concerning the absence of usual smell of pee in such establishments...

Special thanks go to Robyn and her parter Greg who drove me there and back and generally looked after me throughout the day. Special thanks also to Alasdair (Stickyfinger) for his fantastic hospitality at the Somerset end and providing perfect funeral transport in the form of his C5 X7... It is a wonderful car...

I was delighted Kev (Red Dwarfers) attended in his red Xantia, a car many mourners mistook for my Gabriel and made many cutting and jokey comments not realising it was Kev's car... The funeral thus ended in gales of laughter and that is how I always want to remember it... Without Kev and his red Xantia it would not have happened - Thanks Kev!

And finally, a big thank too one and all on this forum for your wonderful support these past three weeks. It made all the difference.

Pleased it went well Jim, I know that some of the funerals we have attended in recent times have turned out to be great social occasions, we have met up with people we haven't seen for years which helps to take some of the sadness away. Sounds as though you had a good day.

Glad, too, the day went well, Jim. Such days are important, and will always be remembered. Good, these days, to be able to have humour, smiles, applause and laughter at these times. Long, long overdue, and often just what the departed would have wanted for everyone. Glad a few of us were there, too.
