Replacing Xantia Instrument Illumination Bulbs

I think that Rapid Electronics offer 14v capless, in a couple of wattages.
You can also wedge one of these little lamps in a piece of pvc sleeving, or a sleeved grommet (sorry, Gibbo) to insert it into its socket, and then twist off the tubular 'holder'.

It's been a mighty long time since I've changes an S1 heater panel lamp but, IIRC, last time I managed it quite easily by accessing it through the radio aperture and removed - and fitted - the new lamp with the aid of a small socket on the end of a small ¼" extension bar. You wedge the end of the captive lamp in the socket and feel around for where it goes !

Superb timing, this is a job I need to do next year, as well as the heater bulbs (entire bottom is unlit on mine!). Doesn't look too tricky looking at your pictures

A how to for removing the heater controls would be good, the speed control knob on mine snapped off (still adjustable with a small screwdriver), I had a brief go at removing it but could not work it out.

But before doing either of those jobs, it A - needs to warm up a bit and B - I need glue as my dash innards are a bit broken around the radio and top row of buttons!

My heater controls are totally screwed. The sliders dont seem to control anything behind the panel so i'm guessing the wires are knackered. A 'howto' remove heater panel would certainly complement this bulb repkacement procedure. I'm guessing it's eadiet to just dip into the dash the once and kill two birds with the proverbial one stone?

Mike, that needs a bit of deeper diagnosis... Start a new thread and then we can get it sorted for you

For both of you, I'll do a little how-to on how to pull out the panel... It's made a little trickier as there are two bowden cables involved...

a pre stretched steel cable within a self lubricating re-enforced protective sleeve/cable guide.

Think of a throttle cable, a choke cable, a speedo cable, a clutch cable or a brake cable on a bike. They are all examples of Bowden cables...

Thanks for this guide Jim. Finally got to Fred's bulbs, mainly for the engine temperature bulb which hasn't worked for 10 years. Only to find the bulbs I bought are terrible quality. Sigh. The couple I got to work show how dull the original bulbs have become though. Have ordered some more.

I notice in your photos that your electric door mirror switch is the same as mine. I always thought mine was aftermarket as it doesn't match very well!

No, that's the standard for low-specification Xantias Jaf... Seems a most odd way of doing it to me!
