Stick with your C5 search, there are many good ones around, all have a good spec and if you go for either the 2.0HDi 8v in the C5I or the 2.0HDI 16v in the C5II they are generally reliable and return great economy with good performance, especially the 16v.

I looked at 406s a while back, they are nice cars but like you, I didn't want an estate version and found the saloon too impractical for my uses.
