So, this means that if the injector was disconnected when the engine was off, then the injector would stay closed? The engine could then be started on 3 cylinders, and driven to see if the rattle has dissapeared. Maybe that's what the last Pug technician was thinking.
I am getting the feeling that at least one of the injectors on this engine has had it's chips. They're not cheap either! Bugger.
Anyone know if it's possible to disable the pre-injection in some way to confirm that this is indeed the problem?

I very much doubt it, its programmed into the ecu.
Mine rattles sometimes, it only happens if the engine usnt up to temperature yet and there is a biggish load on it from 2000 - 3000 rpm. Once over 70 degrees on the gauge, it doesnt rattle any more.

Hi
I aksed my mate about the HDI rattle problem, His answers where.
Possible crank pully,
Injection pump timing,
Or most likely the engine cover could be lose, He has had loads with lose engine covers & the rattle that it caused was pretty bad.
Also, It takes less then a second to hydraulic a HDI engine by unplugging an injector while its running.

I didn't think the injection pump could be timed on these engines. Surely the injection timing is completely electronic and utterly un-adjustable?
I have had the crank pulley suggested before, but it is fine, and I doubt it would exhibit the abrupt cut-off at 3100rpm. I have temporarily removed the engine cover to have a good listen to it, so it can't be that.
The rattle that this engine makes sounds too much like pre-ignition to me. I cannot help but believe the injectors are not injecting correctly. Has anyone heard of HDi injectors wearing out? the car has just over 100k on it, which isn't exactly loads for an HDi.

Thats correct, the injection timing is controled etirley by the ECU.
A rattle at high revs is a symptom of injectors 'wearing out',i very much doubt it has anything to do with the EGR valve.

Interesting. The 3 Peugeot dealers I've been to all swear blind that the injectors on these engines never ever wear out, and that they have never had to change one ever. I can't believe that.
Has anyone heard of replacement injectors being available from anywhere other than peugeot? The want 2 major limbs and a major organ per injector!
Or... does anyone know what different injectors were fitted to different HDi engines, and how to tell the difference between them? HDi engines are beginning to turn up in scrappers all over the place now, and although the engines usually get sold complete, there are some that are beginning to be broken for bits.

i cant belive that either, these injectors have also been known to cause non-start due to sticking.the two main types of injectors are Bosch & Siemens, the siemens ones are piezo type & bosch are coil type.

I've started a new thread for this, as I think this one has gone rather off topic!
