The starting handle was one area where the manufacturers never saw the potential for starting handles as fashionable accessories: :-D

I did use the starting handle on my GS, just to try it, never actually needed.

That looks like one for a Petter/Lister diesel. We had a diesel Austin A60, that had a starting handle, I don't know why only Popeye could have started it using one.

Not that I noticed Mick, but it was secondhand so someone might have nicked it.

I have great memories of hand-starting many Lister diesels using a similar, but not so brightly painted, handle as that.

The most important thing was never to let go of it when the engine started ;) Keep it well held or disaster could (would) strike... If you let go of it then run and hide - fast!

When the engine was up and running, just slide it off the shaft whilst still holding it firmly...

I've hand-started some very large military gensets and using the decompressors, not as hard a task as it might be first thought...

Bird Brands

The Wren and the Kiwi...big in shoe polish

Mentioned the Wren over on POTD, but that has led onto the Kiwi. As you look around at the footwear of the masses in the 2020's, it isn't the type of thing that requires a daily brushing, blackening and polishing with a tin of shoe polish.

I had a feeling I had a tin of Dubbin in an old box in the garage, so I went to see. Alas no Dubbin, however I did come across this motley selection of polishes and treatments from days gone by which includes one tin from Neil's original picture, the Kiwi Parade Gloss Prestige!! :-D

I knew there was some somewhere, 6' from where I was sat.
Presume the wife bought it so it has probably been here 25 years or more.
