I have heard of this one, unsurprising seeing as it is stocked at all sorts of locations mostly in Notrhumberland/Durham and made in Blyth, and can be bought on-line

I do like a name, and one of the out-of-area stockists on the website is...

This little discussion on Scotlands Enchanting Kingdom, has plenty of comments on our ginger wine essence.

A recommendation for the previously mentioned Rochester

Anyone who hankers after the taste of the old Castle Wyness Ginger at Christmas should try Rochester Ginger - DICKENSIAN RECEIPE...as near to the old tatse as you will ever find. Make sure it's the right one listed above as Rochester also make 2 other types of Ginger drinks.
The Co-op in Scotland certainly used to stock in the run up to Christmas Yu-lade

I remember some years ago a craze for home made ginger beer - followed by quite a few explosion's, a friend of ours in the village had glass shards sticking in the cupboard door.

I remember my grandmother had Stones Ginger wine in stone jars - I don't actually remember any wine but the containers made excellent hot water bottles.

I remember those too, although I don't recall what the product was.
But my maternal grandparents had ceramic hot water bottles similar to them, with a flattened 'side that was the bottom and the stopper on the opposite side.

These were similar except they were shaped like gallon jars with the stopper at the top and they had a handle, we are going back 70 years or more, I will see if I can find a picture.

If I remember correctly can remember occasionally getting stuff called "Hop Bitters" in such a container from the Pop Man. An acquired taste and cant remember liking it at all but probably would now!

Notice how bold companies were with their claims, not like those wimps Carlsberg with their "probably" on their famous tag line....no Fentimans just put it plainly on the bottle

Brewed and Bottled in a Perfect Factory at King Street Gateshead.

and yes...you can visit on Thursdays to see for yourself!

So what's the specific 'law' that makes it illegal to use that bottle ? :-k

Surely borrowing the "Pig" for a short period of time isn't illegal. After all, you are just washing it out with hot water before you return it.

Thinking about it, they've no doubt invested a lot of money in getting those bottles made so would be very keen to get them back once people had used them, and they really didn't want people hanging onto them as that'd mean they had less in stock to use.........

......so that would make it the law of diminishing returns.

I'll get my own coat on the way out

Yep, there the ones, thanks folks. I looked at some Stones bottle pictures they are similar but with a long neck. They are the exact ones as far as I remember and we had them as hot water bottles. I think they must have been a generic product as the ones I know were in Bromley and people didn't usually travel that far in those days.

My grandparents were born in the 1880s so I didn't know them until the '40s. My Gran was born on a farm near Biggin Hill and use to travel to Bromley for shopping in a pony and trap. There is a photo of the high street at the time which was then just a mud track, there was a wooden house where HG Wells lived she told me, she was very interesting to talk to.
