I have been mulling over the whole Bev subject and I think I have come to a realisation which is different from the majority of people's view. The general problem perceived by the majority is range and range anxiety. Well it occurs to me that range is only a number and whether it is 110 or 260 it doesn't make any difference to the issues that arise when the 'please charge me light' comes on.

It is the possible running out of range with no guaranteed charging point that is the main issue regardless of how many miles it takes to reach that position from charged. Ignoring the electrical supply issues and logistics for a moment I believe that if every current filling station had all the pumps fitted with charging points working on a universal use and pay system, the same as for current fuels then the so called 'range anxiety would disappear. The reaction to the 'charge required' light would be the same as the current fuel guage heading into the red. Who has range anxiety in current vehicles?

So the real main limitation to Bevs in my view is our inability to provide sufficient charge points, all being fed with ample green power, to make it available on every existing forecourt. It is that very limitation that makes people want more range to hopefully allow them to charge overnight, carry out the day's motoring and get home again to recharge! If charging was available in minutes at every current outlet 'range anxiety' would no longer exist!

It seems to me that the industry is approaching the problem from the wrong direction. Forget the continuous strive for more range with bigger and bigger batteries and concentrate on smaller, lighter batteries that may only give 100 miles range but can recharge in 10 mins or less and have chargers on every current refuelling site!! :)

This is what happens when the cold keeps you stuck on the sofa with nothing to watch!! :-D

Perfectly rational and so simple. Begs the question "Why Not?". Quick simple charging is no different to quick fuel stops.

PS. There are reasons why you don't want EV charging close to Petroleum pumps but, with proper separation, what is holding this back.

This has all the echoes of the drive to LPG. How many garages installed then ditched LPG and "Why?"

I think the real current reason "Why not?" is the one that I chose to ignore. The reality is that to supply sufficient current to all the garages to run chargers on every pump would basically require a completely new high current grid as the existing grid's distribution cabling simply wouldn't cope with the current demand! That is the biggest issue with the plan. I'm sure as we go forward we will be able to develop onsite generation, be it from wind, solar, gravity, even nuclear but that will take a long time with a huge committed investment which in itself would be a significant problem I can't help thinking that were the whole HS2 budget switched to such a project it would only scratch the surface !! :(

Or you have to accept Granny Levels of charging rate and wait hours.
You are right about the HS2 budget scale of things.
Our Grid couldn't cope with all electric Housing 10 years ago according to figures then and hence the slow rate of Decarbonising Housing. How on earth is it going to cope with the power requirements of "Cities on Wheels" as well. Sorry, can't buy into it yet.

Not for me. Does it use AAA batteries?

Not Quite. 60 mile range. L7e class for DVLA Registration - "Road Legal"? RHD, 2 str, room for shopping. What's not to like? I can see these ending up on an Estate or Holiday Park where limited public road use is needed. Joe Public buying one?

If I had home charging it would suffice for most of my needs as I rarely stray more than 10 miles from home.
Maybe chuck an extension lead out of the window, over the footpath and down the tree and park it on the grass.

These are typical of what is available from China. The Pickup type vehicle is quite popular, partly because of prices.

One interesting idea is covered in this video which I don't think I've come across in reality! :-D

Just one of the very many intolerable 'presenters'!
Ruins what may have been something of interest.
