405 Rear Brake Drum Removal

How do you release the brake shoes to allow removal of the rear drum on a 1985 405. I can see through the inspection hole a lever but this only moves a small amount and doesn't seem to realse the shoes enough to allow removal of the drum. I have slackend the handbrake cable but still the shoes are preventing drum removal. Can any help please?
