Impact driver earning it's keep again earlier:
Thought it was rounding, despite the impact driver's excellent ability not to do so, about 3 or 4 times, stopped and just assessing what next, much to my surprise found I could screw in back in about half a turn! Unaware I had made any progress up to that point. Did it freely unscrew then, nope! But thankfully only a little more walloping and progress was made.
I think that Torx recently is about 50% deeper than before I started!
When will folks stop doing these up to 700Nm!?! I believe I still have my impact driver, although it's along time since I've seen it.
It was a 21st birthday present from fellow students in the 1970's, and one of the most thoughtful/appropriate presents I can ever remember receiving. At the time my only transport was a Honda 350 twin, which was largely held together with Philips-head bolts. It needed frequent maintenance, and the impact driver was an absolute necessity!

That's when I first got mine Alec... Back in the days I was well into Japanese motorbikes... Happy memories
Without an impact driver life was miserable... I remember so many bikes with mangled screws where attempts had been made with an ordinary ill-fitting screwdriver...
People did not appreciate Phillips and Posi-Drive were different and many still don't...
We often replaced those screws with Allen headed ones...

I had no idea that there were a variety of Phillips head 'shapes' (size differences were obvious, even to me ) - luckily the bits that came with the impact driver fitted the Honda pretty well!

I did know about JIS headed screw thanks to a programme some years ago where James May would attempt to assemble various devices from an assorted pile of bits - a motor mower comes to mind.
I can't remember what it was he was working on but he showed a set of JIS screwdrivers and explained the difference. The importance was somewhat diluted when, later on, I noticed he was using normal Phillips screwdrivers!

As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.
