Oil heaters were in fashion over here in the 60's and 70's - my in-laws' house still has a tank of the stuff. Australian heating oil was definitely not kerosene - seemed very similar to diesel fuel.

Used to have a 504 XUD, but I wasn't into fuel experiments in those days

The oil mix is the most important factor, if you mix sufficient oil with it to make it of the same viscosity as diesel it will work in older engines but I don't know about common rail, anyone got an old engine to try it on?

Just imagine this...
Regular petrol is 1.17 euro a liter - first part of February 2022.
Finally made my mind about ordering a new car.
Ordered a new petrol car on the 14th of February 2022.
Regular petrol is now 1.72 euro a liter. Yesssssss!

It means I am trying not to think too much about this so I used a tiny bit of sarcasm. I had my fuel budget set for a time now and went to the petrol station to fill my C5 up and, guess what? The old budget won't fill up my C5's big tank with the new prices. Of course, when you think about it, getting is new car is way more expensive than a 50% increase on the fuel price but the price of the car was expected while the fuel price increase was not.

The fuel tank on our C3 Aircross has a 37.5% decrease in capacity so is a lot smaller than my C5 X7, (the C5 has a 72 litre fuel tank compared to 45 litres on the Aircross). We just top it up when it's anywhere from half to 2/3 full, which although it appears a lot more frequently to me of course, the capacity is a lot less.

Diesel here is £1.72 - £1.78 a litre (€2.05 to €2.14) yesterday.

As the UK closed a lot of refineries over the years, guess where a lot of our diesel is refined? - Russia. So we can probably expect that diesel price to remain high regardless of the global oil prices I suspect for a while yet.

There are about 19 million diesel cars in the UK and about 20% is refined in Russia, but I've heard it say that because of 'transhipment' it is probably nearer to 40%.

Not there yet - just filled up the C5 from 1/4 tank (on the gauge) £98.06p, £1.94 short of the £100, perhaps next time. 8-[ [-o<
Thnak god I only use the car for long distance travel now and get 45-50 mpg, without slowing down too much.

Diesel is about £1:70 per litre today, we are off to Scotland in a few days so our fuel cost will be substantially more than last year. I have come to the conclusion that a horse and cart is the optimum vehicle, fuel available everywhere and mostly free. I know it still uses some when idling but it's not polluting the atmosphere - well maybe briefly.

Peter have you ever visited Arran, Rothesay and the Isle of Bute, Millport Great Cumbrae :?: If so you may be able to add an anecdote to our "Today's County in the Spotlight thread" which today is Buteshire :-D

Hi Neil

Our preferred area is Sutherland and Caithness - less people and traffic. We have been going up there for about 45 years so we are sort of in a rut, we have been across to the west coast a few times but sorry, no is the answer.
