DS DS5 Rear windscreen washer not working

Post by Edmund »

 Does the DS5 (2015>) have a separate pump for the rear windscreen washer? Mine isn't working, front washer is fine.
Where is the pump located and how do I get to it and/or check for blockages in the tube? (No Haynes Manual for these cars)
It will need remedying before the MoT and Citroën have quoted me £285  for parts and labour. I think that is excessive.

Hi, and :welc: to the Forum. In order for the Moderators to know what pump system your car has they will need the VIN (which, for security reasons, will be obscured so only forum staff can read it).

Normally (but NOT always) there is just one pump, but it spins one way for the front windscreen wash, and the other way for the rear windscreen wash.

No it doesn't - it's a reversible pump unit, but there are several variations depending on options. There's the reservoir about £66 and the pump unit about £50 - but depends on your specific vehicle. I can tell you which, when you provide the VIN - however, very rare for these to go.

1) When you operate the rear wash / wipe do you hear a noise from the pump? If you do, then it's likely a blocked or kinked pipe somewhere. The somewhere is probably why they are quoting as much - as they'll need to trace where the blockage is.

Hello James and thanks for your very quick reply. I'll take a look at the VIN number and let you know. So far, in 10 months of ownership, the car has been plagued by electrical faults from the BlueHDi pump (£1700) to an electric circuit fault which needs to be diagnosed. Bring back my Rover 75 (smile)! :-D

Hi Edmund, did you find the rear washer problem? I'm having the same issue. Started once the fluid reservoir got low...guessing crud from the reservoir. Also probably coincidentally, I'm getting electrical circuit error being displayed.
All thoughts welcome...

May not be at all relevant here, but just a reminder that screenwash with added Rain-X has been flagged on the web as sometimes causing erroneous Washer Low Level warnings, where there sensor is looking for a conductive fluid (rather than being a float switch). The Rain-X mix has been noted as both having lower conductivity than standard wash or water, but also coating some types of sensor with an unhelpful insulating layer.

Cleaning the electrodes can provide a temporary remedy, and giving them a bigger surface area, or bringing them closer together, can often solve the issue completely.

Thanks Chris, that might explain the lack of warning light for the water tank (it's the first time I've had to fill it since i bought it so i assumed there wasn't one)... :)

Not a problem on the DS7 as they seem to have forgotten that a low washer fluid sensor might be a useful thing to have!

There's a fluid warning on the ds5? I've never seen a warning and I've had it running fairly low (when the flow is visibly reduced)

Could be an air lock or a bit of grit or sediment stuck in the nozzle. Try using a pin in the nozzle to see if that sorts it. It's also possible that the rear washer tube has come off somewhere - watch out for water where it shouldn't be...
