One has to ask "Why?" much as I do about television - & haircuts! Now let's see, at £7 a throw, how much have I saved by not having a haircut since 1998 (I think)?

Don't know, but I just remembered a mutual joke from the 80s

Someone at work asked if I'd got my new haircut on the NHS, and I replied that by coincidence it was the same price as a prescription charge.

I've cut my own hair since 1989. Away from home in Austria, one evening I looked in the mirror, thought how difficult can it be, and got going ...

Next breakfast and the next couple of days 5 people asked me whereabouts on site the hairdresser was, so it couldn't have been that bad.

A UK prescription was £5.80 in 1999. A haircut in Ireland currently costs about €15 or around £12, a Turkish barber could be double that depending on where you are. I go to a hairdresser, €10 for a crew cut on my remaining hair takes all of 3 minutes.

Maybe, but two of the first three were definitely considering a haircut.

I used to work with someone who had a crew cut every Spring - so over the years he might well have saved even more than I have.

The french have a phrase for the crew cut according to wiki

Well Greg Davies has done a documentary called "Greg Davies: Looking for Kes" its on BBC Four Iplayer just now.

Worth a watch if like me you have an affection for that film.

Barry Hines also wrote the famous/infamous 1980s screenplay Threads, which featured a UK in crisis including panic buying, shortage of food in supermarkets, nationwide school closures and a rising sense of fear. It was a Cold War scenario - luckily that sort of scenario is in the past.......
