Changing the auto transmission fluid, ensuring its the right specification fluid, and the changing procedure and level checking is as per manufacturers spec is the only relatively low cost intervention.

It can be possible to "anticipate what its going to do" and back off the revs to minimise the "slipping and thumping" but it isnt a solution of course.

If the fluid change doesnt improve things, then unless you are a "5-spanner" DIY mechanic, unfazed by such things as replacing solenoids, valve bodies, or removing the entire box and rebuilding it, you are in the hands of the professional rebuilders and its going to be expensive.

As in James' reply to your intro post, if you post your VIN number up, Marc (Givemeabreak) will more than likely be along to give you chapter and verse on the autobox fitted to your car and recommended fluids/changing procedure.

Give it a little time; Marc (who is the most likely person to give you the relevant information) is sometimes busy. Now he has access to the VIN he will be able to let you know a LOT about your car (what she had when she rolled out of the factory, the correct fluids, and so on). If you need to change the gearbox fluid you MUST use the correct fluid; anything else is likely to wreck it.

Yes, been a little busy helping others, but confirmed as AL4 gearbox on your 207.

So the recommended oil is ESSO ATF for 4HP20/AL4 gearboxes.

Are you going to be changing the oil yourself or leaving it to a garage?

The AL4 transmissions frequently suffered from poor gear changes due to failing pressure regulation solenoids, and the design was updated with a new type of solenoid. I don't know if your car has the earlier or later solenoids fitted. Replacement of the solenoid is not a huge job, but the transmission ECU requires a software upgrade if the early type was previously fitted.

In any case, the car probably needs to have computer diagnostics done to determine the problem.

I'm sure your mechanic knows, but this is only a partial drain and refill as you can't fully drain the torque converter. So you'll be able to replace approx. 3Lts of ATF fluid only per change.

You'll also need to ensure the oil is at 60 °C before draining to ensure that any foreign particles are suspended in the fluid when draining. He'll also need to reset the gearbox oil counter with a suitable diagnostic tool (preferably PP2000).

I hope it's nothing more serious, but if there is a serious fault with the box it will go into a downgrade mode:

In the event of a gearbox malfunction, there are 2 possible configurations depending on the severity of the fault:
  • Gearbox in back-up mode with a substitute programme (the default values are used)
  • Gearbox in back-up mode with an emergency programme (3rd hydraulic)

Thanks so much for the information, as I said in my first post I have had no warning lights or anything so it's a little strange thanks again 😀
