Dear Board
Have had a look around here and see that it is most likely resistor failure.
Just wanted to check this observation. Fan is on all the time at constant speed from Auto, 0 then through 1,2 & 3 marks BUT past 4th mark it goes to FULL blast. Would this indicate anything other than a resistor fail?
Thanks
Xsara blower on (almost) full blast all the time

If this is a M II with regular A/C, then the blower control module will likely be located on the blower motor itself, shown separated as item (4) below. Your VIN will confirm.
And most likely will be the cause - it's usually all or nothing - but this is an older type of unit so may exhibit the specific issues you describe.

Ok, slightly different - from your VIN:
Part number: 644178. These retail at Citroen for £216.40 inc. VAT.

Re: Xsara blower on (almost) full blast all the time
Hi Marc
I'm thinking of just replacing the whole blower unit rather than faff about. I've looked up a few but although my car is listed, when I put in Reg No in they all say not compatible. Would you be able to identify the correct part number for the whole blower unit for my VIN?
Cheers!

The part is 6441N4
No longer available from Citroen, but plenty of aftermarket ones available. Just make sure you confirm any replacement comes with the blower resistor module though!
And when you search, make sure you put in ‘Citroen 6441N4’

Re: Xsara blower on (almost) full blast all the time
Hi Marc and thanks as always for your help.
Pulled down the carpet in footwell to have a good look at what I was going to attempt and took the pic I posted here. Didn't touch anything. Got into car yesterday started up and the fan now works as normal!
Have already ordered replacement just in case.
Cheers!

Re: Xsara blower on (almost) full blast all the time
It might be that the bearings are seizing due to moisture in the motor and not enough welly to kick start the motor when it starts off at slow speed. The atmospheric conditions / temperature may have helped it on this occasion. I would keep an eye on it, but if it starts happening more frequently you may need to intervene.

Hi Marc and thanks again.
The level of detail & knowledge you bring to this forum is only matched in my experience with AndersDK who helped me a great deal with my BX's back in the 2000's.
I see though that he has not been around for some time which is very sad.
I have a few more niggles with Xsara but will post when they become more problematic
Cheers

It is a shame that Anders is no longer active, he was indeed a great help to many.

If you do end up with more fan issues, let me know.
I have a whole fan unit I took from a VTS I broke recently on which ive replaced the resistor pack. It's sat in a box of parts in my garage as a spares part.
