After driving the car all day and fitting a new fuel pressure regulator the van has just failed again. Waiting on recovery.
Same problem every time. Same warning comes up every time.
I agree it probably needs to go to a Citroen garage for a full diagnostic but the garage my son in law uses are very helpful and have put their diagnostics on the van several times.
Never ever known anything like this.

Re: Citroen despatch 1.9 diesel fuel issue?
The dealer diagnostics are able to interrogate the ECUs that other units may not be able to read. Additionally, commercial vans like the Jumpy / Dispatch will require a special add-on module (S1279) that Citroen / Peugeot dealers will have access to, as these vehicles were joint ventures with Fiat.
I think getting a proper dealer level diagnostic is your best bet as they will have both the correct equipment - but additionally, will be aware of any technical service bulletins that may be applicable that an indy won't have access to.
I know there was an electrical issue with the fuel cooler under the body on these that caused issues.
There are also 9 known TSBs for this model that the dealer can rule in or out after they have ran a diagnostic.
Make sure you get the codes from them.

Re: Citroen despatch 1.9 diesel fuel issue?
Thanks.
They've only just got home on the recovery truck with the youngster. The fault that came up was the pressure regulator which had only been changed a few hours previously.
I will advise my son in law to get a dealer diagnostic.
At the moment they feel like pushing the van over a cliff!

One of the very last vehicles in my garage was one of these. Same fault. This explains it better:

Apologies if your van is not the same, seventeen years have since passed.

My son in law just got home and took the cam and pump drive apart. It was loose as it should be, not tight as your was. Is that ok?
Thanks

Please see my reply below. Thankyou for info. Van is 2009 model. The pump drive was loose in the cam, not tight like yours, so I guess that is not the issue?1080 wrote: ↑14 Oct 2019, 20:12 One of the very last vehicles in my garage was one of these. Same fault. This explains it better:

Hello, I am going from memory on this one. The drive on the camshaft should be tight on the shaft.
If it looks like this one:

Sorry, wrong photo.
I will update later.

Re: Citroen despatch 1.9 diesel fuel issue?
Would appreciate clarification. The blog suggested pump drive very tight and needed some force to move.
One in van was quite sloppy and had play in it.
Thankyou for your help.
Have been telling son in law for ages that he needed to take van to a specialist, but cost is an issue.

Re: Citroen despatch 1.9 diesel fuel issue?
If the drive can be moved without the driven shaft moving, you have found the problem. By chance I'm in Llandudno for a week from 25/10/19. If you don't get sorted by then, maybe you could bring the part to show me. Probably too far though?
The pump puts a varying force on the driven shaft. This is why the problem - on my vehicle - was intermittent. The Greatest Load is with cold (viscous) fuel and approaching the point where the pressure regulator cuts in. A photo would help jog my memory. Thanks.

Re: Citroen despatch 1.9 diesel fuel issue?
Back home now.
I think this bit relates to you:
We next removed the high pressure pump and sent it for bench testing – the pump came back with a clean bill of health. Prior to refitting the pump, an inspection of the drive in the end of the cam shaft revealed the cause of the problem. The cam shaft is hollow and the pump drive is a shrink fit, and is a separate piece. This had become sufficiently loose over time, which meant that when the pump load increased, and in turn a higher rail pressure was required, the drive slipped on the camshaft and rotated separately. On initial examination the pump drive looked OK, with no evidence of slipping. The pump drive was difficult to turn on the camshaft by hand, the use of a small lever bar was required.
The Drive is a Shrink (tight) Fit to the Shaft.
On my customer's van it was also possible to TURN the Pump Drive Independently (with a bit of force) of the shaft. When the pump puts a load on the drive, the drive slips - fuel pressure drops - engine management & engine itself does not like it - engine misbehaves.
Loctite bearing fit or similar would possibly give a temporary 'fix' and would confirm that this is the cause your problem. Good Luck!

Or even carefully mig welding pump the drive to the camshaft. A bodge, I know, and I cannot visualise the camshaft, so may not be practicable?
But you would then know for certain if this was the cause, without throwing more money at it...
Finally, the number of camshafts for your engine that have sold on eBay would also point to this being the root of your problems?
From memory, the camshaft from Citroen was around £320, they're much cheaper nowadays

Re: Citroen despatch 1.9 diesel fuel issue?
If there is iron filings in the filter, this would suggest the pump is breaking down!
Back when I owned a Renault Laguna, the pumps were built and lined with elastomer (teflon based) which is ok with normal diesel, but not with petrol or bio diesel.
There were many horror stories of petrol being put in the tank (either by acccident or design) and the elastomer would start falling apart inside the pump and clogging the system. Sometimes the engine still ran, but the lubrication was gone and the pump would start eating itself...
I believe they also do not like bio diesel as it has a similar effect on the innards.
It may be something worth looking into....

Has anyone seen the plot?

Re: Citroen despatch 1.9 diesel fuel issue?
Son in law wont have a chance to look at anything for a couple of days. I know both he and the garage had been concerned about the amount of filings in the filter but the pump has been checked out. Will let you know what transpires.
I understand this may be a different engine , 2l, to the one 1080 had problems with. The pump drive has been checked out and seems to be ok, but as I said son in law will be checking further with the garages help in a few days.
Thankyou for further advice.

Re: Citroen despatch 1.9 diesel fuel issue?
The worrying thing is that should those filings get into the HP pump they will wreck it. This is assuming that the engine is an HDi unit (it could be, because of the age).
